I won't chuck the towel in, says Burnley manager

MANAGER Brian Laws has vowed not to throw in the towel, despite Burnley’s poor run extending to just one win in 19 Premier League games.

The Clarets missed the chance to climb out of the relegation zone and create a three-point gap over Wolves after suffering their fourth home defeat of the season.

Instead, the Midlands side are now benefiting from breathing space, and a game in hand, following a 2-1 win at Turf Moor.

“We feel a little bit hard done by and it’s knocked the stuffing out of us.

"But we’ve got to move on again,” said Laws, for whom the task of engineering a first away win, at Wigan on Saturday, has intensified.

“It’s disappointing and it’s a huge knock that we’ve got to take, but we’ve got eight games to go.

“There are still a lot of games to be played and a lot of points to play for.

“That’s a body blow for us but we can’t let it affect us and we certainly can’t allow it to destroy our last eight games.

“There’s still an awful lot of games to be played and it only takes one win and we’re back in it.

“Certainly nobody at this football club is going to be disillusioned or disappointed. We’re going to move on and keep fighting away until it’s mathematically impossible.

“While there’s a little bit of a gap we’ve got to try to improve our away performance. If we get an away win under our belt all of a sudden the disappointment of our home defeat is melted away.”

Laws came in for vehement criticism for withdrawing Chris Eagles in a double substitution 10 minutes into the second half. But the Burnley boss felt his decision was vindicated, not least when Eagles’ replacement, Steven Thompson, pulled a goal back with his first Premier League strike.

Robbie Blake, who came on for Andre Bikey, had earlier been denied by the post.

“I’m a little bit disappointed with the fact the crowd were disappointed with that, but I hope that on reflection they might look at it more as a positive than a negative,” said Laws, who was without Kevin McDonald because of a back problem and on-loan Jack Cork because of a calf injury.

“We tried to put some legs in the middle of the midfield because I thought that’s where we were lacking a little bit, that’s why I put Wade Elliott in there. I was being positive with Blakey and I thought he was exceptionally good when he came on.

“Those judgement calls were perfect. We had more attempts at goal in that last 30 minutes than we had all game.

“They’re the positives. A striker goes on and scores a goal, what more could you ask?”

But Laws felt luck had deserted them for a Wolves side who had previously bemoaned a lack of it.

“Mick McCarthy had been talking about not having any luck but they certainly got it (on Saturday).

“It was a poor mistake by ourselves which gave them the first goal.

"It was unfortunate but we had to regroup and push it to one side and get on with the game.

“We had a few chances in the first half to get back into it, we hit the crossbar, but didn’t quite hit the back of the net.

“The key is obviously not to concede so early in the second half, but we did with a deflection.

“It didn’t seem to be our day. As far as luck’s concerned it certainly deserted us.

“I didn’t think we deserved that. But obviously with a two-goal lead they’ve got something to hang onto.

“Mick McCarthy may admit they’re hanging on at the death.

"That just shows commitment is there, we just need a little bit of luck on our side.”

PaulK, I think the players are now finding it very difficult to believe that they could possibly stay up especially after Saturdays game.

One win in 19 games must start to play on the mind and the fact the lose of home form.

I think the bit of luck we had at the start of the season , which every team has at some point has deserted us and you only have to look at the 2nd goal to see that. Add that to the fact were not getting those decisions with possible penalty shouts.

It was always going to be a tuff ride for the Clarets in the Premiership and one that almost every fan before the season started said they were just going to enjoy the adventure no matter what.

Yes it has turned sour but lets get behind the team win, lose or draw for the remaining 8 games and make the most of it while the adventure last,

The great escape is still on untill its sealed in black and white.

Ossy, your dead right regarding some players.
BL took over a team that was struggling thats why OC left. He knew it was going to get worse and left.
N
BL should not be judged on his 10/11 games in charge or on what happend at Sheff Wed whom have had huge money troubles the whole time he was there.
On the other hand Ossy we dont wanna be getting on the players back now with just 8 games left to play.
The players we have now are here to stay for those remaining games that is'nt going to change so we have to back them all the way untill that final game.
As i said above to Paul , the luck has deserted us , were not getting the rub of the green at present but just maybe it could turn at Wigan and lets hope it does.

Madari, you cant blame this on BL he took over a team in a slump and a team built by OC.
You cant judge him on the 10/11 games or what happend at Sheff Wed.
You obviously have a big downer on Bl but why? Who would you have had as Manager?
Why not get behind the manager and the team for the remainder of the season. If the adventure ends so be it.

Hull City have just relieved Phil Brown of his duties....Hull City clearly value their hard earned premier league status.

I wish i could say the same for Kilby and Flood, they went for an untried, out of work option.

After Coyle`s departure the club should have appointed an experianced manager that had the capcity to galvanise the club, I am afraid Brian Laws is lacking in this department.

Since BL`s appointment he has not played the same team twice, is it any wonder that the players dont want to play for him.

There is a man at St Johnstone ,Derek McInnis who took over from Owen Coyle and took St Johnstone into the SPL something Coyle had previously failed to do.

I believe he is the man that should have been appointed after Coyle`s departure.

Laws should never have been appointed as he was not the fans first choice neither was he Kilby and Floods first choice.

One more defeat for the Clarets and the fans are going to turn on Laws.

I hope i have made my self clear.

It was horrible to hear the boo's and abuse that rang out at the turf after the game Saturday.

I know as fans we pay our hard earned money to watch the club we love and support so much and feel that when things dont go well we have the right to voice opinions.

That is true of course but it does not help during the game or at the end. It should be done in a constructive manner on here or other forums. All it will do at other games is heap more preasure on the players with time running out.

I feel that the other fans and teams we have yet to play will be rubbing their hands in glee waiting for the chance to play us and the staff and players will feel that the whole stadium is against them whether they are at home or away.

They will know that the slightest mistake, the stray pass, a miss attempt at goal or just struggling to get in the game that our own fans will be booing, jeering and abusing and turning on thier own team.

What could be more of an incentive to the opposing teams and supporters who were about to face.

Its been an adventure one which if everyone was honest was going to be a difficult task but wanting to enjoy that moment in the premiership no matter what happend.

That adventure may still continue , there is still an outside chance of a great escape but it needs every one of us supporters to get right behind the team whether things are going right or not.

keep up the good support forget the booing, jeering cheer as loud as you can and enjoy what remains of that adventure .

Madari, that is a fair point you have made, i did'nt even know Phil Brown had been relieved. Have Hull City done themselves any favours though with the trouble they are in and the amount of games left.
Why not see what happens then look for a New Manager at the end of the season.
As For BL i still think he should be given a fair chance , with his players and then judge him .
However i understand what your saying but still think you being a little harsh.

The players are not good enough full stop. They are not Brian's team. The real culprits are Kilby and Flood for failing to recruit quality players.

So lets hear that old familiar chant inside the Turf and outside the club offices :

SACK THE BOARD
repeated to that well kinown tune.
They did after all just let Coyle and his entire coaching staff walk-out, keep Bolton up and probably send us down.

So lets get this on, its about time they knew what we think of them. You never know they might just get the message and change policies on signing on good quality players.

Just finished reading Brendan Flood's book Big Club Small Town. I think the title must have something to do with our Dare To Dream motto;-)

Anyway to cut a long story short its the biggest load of absolute c**p Ive ever read in my life. Full of his life story starting out as a bank clerk and ending with business interests in Manchester which according to the book are in the process of going into liquidation.

The mOst interesting part of the book surrounds the recruitment of Coyle by himself and Kilby. Tells us about the rejected applicants like Reid and Davis. But the biggest p***s take of the lot is quotes from Coyle about the importance of integrity and loyalty. How its important to work hard, a privilege to be in football and to be on the same wave-length as supporters who pay hard-earned money to watch games blah blah blah.

Now exposed for the total hypocrisy and pack of lies that it is. To be fair its not Flood and Kilby saying this. They seem to have been duped as we have. Nonetheless they seem to support these statements and want to be seen in that light but I suspect they will end up ( if they are not already ) as the same as Coyle : total and utter hypocrites!

Dont read the book :you will feel like me as though Coyle ( and his staff ) as well as Flood are simply taking us for a ride.

The simple fact is, Burnley just don't a squad capable of staying in the top flight. They were lucky to get there in the first place, and have now proven beyond any doubt that aren't good enough to stay in this division.
.
I'd just like to say to all the Clarets who were giving large at the beginnig of the season on the Blackburn board: How do you feel now girls and boys? We are comfortably in mid table while you languish in the bottom 3. You claimed you were the best team in East Lancs....hahaha, sit down you deluded fools!!!

Laws’ appointment is proving to be a shocker but given Kilby’s one-eyed cheapskate policy somewhat inevitable. How this board can be held up as a “shining example” is beyond me. All the “thrifty” PR bluster may fool some of the fans (including this paper) but the reality is that we have managed to lose one of the country’s best managers and throw away a decent start to face inevitable relegation. What sort of example is that?

How do you resuscitate a team that is so demoralized that they must approach each game with a feeling of dread.
It is hard to admit but the Clarets were not good enough for the Premiership. They lacked experience at a high level and the naivety shows when they try to defend even the most innocuous attacking balls.
Without tactics suited to the ability of the players they often appear to be like sheep without a shepherd.
They are a middling Championship side and that is where they are heading unless we see a miracle.
Sorry to say this after Wembley but the reality destroyed the dream.
Survival in the Premiership demands a skill of it's own and I'm afraid that the Clarets do not have that. Bolton do and that is the likely reason why Coyle defected

OXCLARET i totally agree with you. if you look at our squad, we have two, at most 3 players who could possibly get into another premier side, albeit a lower order team, like wolves, hull etc. we failed to buy in experience, possibly due to the wage cap. coyle then brought in about 7 players most of them nothing more than bench warmers.we got good early results but couldn't keep it up.coyle goes, in comes laws, i'm not one for changing managers as soon as things start to go wrong, but laws teams appear to be devoid of tactics and balance, the players look lost. we are not playing the football we played under coyle and as such never look like winning a game.it's a shame but relegation is a certaintity now, i just hope we can rebuild and push for a quick return but i'm not confident. much depends on laws ability as a manager,if he gets it wrong on the field and with his purchases we could find ourselves looking down the barrel of relegation again.
