Blackburn Rovers may have to sell to buy ex-Real Madrid defender

SAM Allardyce may have to sell some of his Blackburn Rovers squad to enable him to sign former Real Madrid defender Miguel Salgado.

The 33-year-old former Spanish international is currently in talks with the Ewood Park outfit, with Rovers boss Sam Allardyce keen on snapping him up on a free transfer.

Allardyce’s summer transfer dealings have already stretched his finances to the limit though, having signed six players, leaving the club contemplating ways of improving the quality of the squad without increasing the financial burden.

Salgado has convinced Allardyce he still has the physical attributes to be a success in the Premier League but his signing now depends on freeing up the money to match his wage demands.

This would probably involve the sale of one or two of his squad members, with the club currently boasting 26 senior players – not including the likes of Alan Judge, Keith Treacy and Mark Bunn currently on loan elsewhere.

Rovers could be tempted into cashing in on the significant interest there has been in striker Paul Gallagher, although more trading could be necessary to fit Salgado into the club’s financial constraints.

Meanwhile Aston Villa are still 'very interested' in left back Stephen Warnock, having made official contact over a week ago, although their valuation of around £4million is some way short of Rovers'.

Salgado was at Rovers’ training ground yesterday to have assessments carried out on his fitness and talks about a possible deal are expected to continue.

In 10 years at Real Madrid, having signed from Celta Vigo for 11million euros in 1999, Salgado made over 250 appearances, winning the Champions League twice and the Spanish League title four times.

He has made more than 50 appearances for Spain, featuring in Euro 2000 and the 2006 World Cup, and is a free agent after being released by Real this summer.

Hi guys hope everyone been keeping well - Just flown back to the UK this morning after being away for the last week and glad we finally signed a striker in Kalinic...deal was pending a work permit before I left so glad it all done and dusted...few reservations as will take him awhile to be ready for the physical demands of the Premiership...altho he a big guy rekon he could do with some upperbody work to help get free from defenders like Roque used to.
Also perplexed as to why we included a 15% sell on fee when Pompey were dealing with a straight cash deal?

On another positive the fact we looking at the likes of Salgado is brilliant...I follow Real closely and he a strong and pacey defender who aint afraid to get stuck in or go up and attack...only problem is he alil on the small side...wages could be a prob but rekon we shud sew this deal up ASAP before other clubs undoubtably get interested....heard West Ham are but they waiting on the gold digger Neil to decide on his future.

Regarding Warnock, I think Martin O'Neil needs his glasses slapped off his face...£4m for our player of the season?? this isn't cheeky its just down right disrespectful....£1
0-12mil at least although we should charge £1m extra for the disrespect!

Finally...don't know how true this is as the transfer rumours in Luxor are'nt the most accurate but heard we in for Negredo of Real Madrid...I did mention bout 6 weeks ago that he would be ideal for us but at £12m I don't know how legit this is...supposedly he deciding this week between us and Hull and a few others....be amazing if we pull it off and could be helped with the Salgado signing but unlikely now we have Kalinic.
Would be excited if we get Rothen as opposed to Zenden but have faith in Big Sam.

Hope all you guys are well....be good to know your thoughts on the above!

If Rovers were to lose Steven Warncok they would lose more than just an accomplished squad member.

It was no surprise that Steven was the fans' player-of-the-year as he demonstrated exceptional effort and commitment on the pitch. He should arguably be captain of the team.

Villa's offer of 4m is an insult and we should not entertain any further discussion with them.

I fully agree with Rovers' prudent approach to the wages bill but I believe that it would not make sense to lose Warnock as a means of affording to bring in for one season an aging player in Salgado.

The Spaniard would be a great capture and his signing is well-worth pursuing but, I hope, not at the expense of losing such an established and proven competitor for the club.

If we sell Warnock, our best player consistently for the last three seasons, to make room for that fat, over the hill Spanish joker Salgado I will never go to Rovers again. Absolutely disgraceful. We should be looking at youth, not this has been clown. I saw him in pre-season for Madrid, he had obviously had too many paella's and couldnt run. We need to address our paper thin midfield. I'd much rather sign Zenden that Salgado or failing that, get some young blood in.

there are quite a few squad players sam could dispense with we have 4 goalkeepers for a start..and with feilding showing last night what a real prospect he is then we can surley let brown or bunn go if all this interest in gally is concrete then i would also listen to offers for him id hate to think we would sell stevie warnock just for the sake of bringing in a n other player especially when we dont really have a similar standard replacement as i dont belive olsson is yet upto it and id rather see givet at centre half.having said that if warnock has another good season its inevitable that the bigger boys are gonna come in for him i mjust hope we hold out for a decent price. If glenn johnson is woth 17 million warnock must be worth at least 10. I also think time should be called on treacy and judge i watched sheffield utd last friday and if i hadnt seen the teamsheat i wouldnt have known treacy was playing, just my opinon of course but i dont think he is going to make the grade.Just gotta hope sam gets rid of the right players i certainly dont see him letting warnock or any other first team regular go this close to the start of the season.

Negredo 18mil euros ..no chance if we have to sell to pay the wages of a free transfer then this out of the question...agree with the coments on warnock we cant think about selling unless we are buying 2 first teamers a attacking mid and a winger that can play on both wings would be nice,as we stand we have one of the worst midfeilds in the prem , and that is were games are won and lost, lose the middle of the park and you dont win games ,we gould have the best forwards in the world but with no service they wont score goals, and the same with the defence they need winger to hit that can play a bit in stead of just nocking every ball down the forwards neck ,this kind of play is easy for the prem deffenders to handle, when rovers won the league r slatter j willcox s ripley wernt the best wingers in the world but they were all ways in space and willing to take the ball and do the simple thing get the ball in the box .. simples!!!!

two seasons ago when nelson was injured he was bought in against chelsea to some peoples amazement they did not score.when he has played for us consistantly we have had more clean sheets than any other defender per say.he is not georgia's best defender for nothing nor would rangers buy him if he was useless.last season more penelties were given away buy givet.sam likes big fat defenders like himself..zurab sadly reads the game and does it well.
OK HE HAS ONE BAD PRE SEASON FRIENDLY GAME AGAINST DUNDEE UTD.WHAT ABOUT THE GAME AT EWOOD?SAFE AS HOUSES..

I cant see a) The club selling warnock and b) him wanting to go this season. The world cup is only around the corner and i think he could be an option down the left wing for england if Givet was placed at left back. Warnock for me is a player that would make a difference in any position......i dont know why some are putting 2 +2 togeather and getting 8! Selling warnock to afford a 33 year old right back is not the way forward.

Give Sam a little credit....i think the real debate is what kind of side can Sam put out on saturday? ill hazzard a gues at:

Robinson
Jacobsen
Nelson (fingers crossed)
Samba (still crossed)
Givet
Diouf
Pedersen
Warnock
Nzonzi
Roberts
McCarthy

Pedersen and Kalinic not in starting 11, it was an allignment error. But might be a good idea, was it Tranmere that managed to play 15 minutes with 12 men before anyone noticed. We could play 2 goalkeepers and be the first team not to conceed all season.

I think its a good tactic crying poverty. That way when we do bid for players, nobody will ask us for silly money as they will think we can't afford it. Look at how many years Wenger has been doing the same even though the Arsenal board say they would be willing to back him all the way.

I think that Salgado would be a great buy for Rovers and could add a great deal of experience to our defence. That said, selling Warnock to fund the move is a non-starter for me. We can't be selling our best players 3 days before the start of the season.

I agree that we could lose one of our senior keepers (either Brown or Bunn) since we bought the young Greek lad in this summer and Feilding looks like he could be decent. Then cash in on Gallagher. Of the other possibilities to move out Reid and Dunn would likely be on the biggest wages and, while they could be good players for us, they are just too unreliable - especially Dunn who is always picking up little strains and niggles here and there. I think we could cope to lose one of them. Zurab's days are probably numbered too, playing with the reserves in preseason and now we've signed Givet, Jacobsen and potentially Salgado says it all for what Allardyce thinks of him I think, so he may also be on his way.

I'm sure that there will be some interest in most, if not all, of those players mentioned above. I don't think we should sell any more than two outfield players and a keeper, as we don't have sufficient depth to cover - especially in midfield.

Dont all rovers fans hope you are right?but in reality Kilinic has yet to be tested at this level, where other players who have played champions league football, for smaller clubs have been sold, good world class strikers like Huntellar,Pavel Pogrebnyak who has scored against Utd,we were after him,we were thinking of buying him when Ince went and RSC wanted to leave last xmas, but we decided to pay less money for an unknown untried.
We all hope that like the Grabbi style affair does not happen again, if it does blame williams if it doesnt we will be too happy to rememeber.
Remember there are many other clubs who have tried better players and they have failed in this league but sucsceeded in good leagues like the spanish league, players like Dieago Forlan.
Obviously scoring one goal against UTD does not make Pavel great but he has also done it at the highest level at international level.
Like you I think we are not being told the truth when it comes to transfers when we need a central midfielder and we get stories of every other type of player other than a central midfielder but let the season role on.

Whilst I don't want him to go, Warnock isn't as good as people are making out.
Wigan away... one of the worst performances I have ever seen by any Rovers player.

For me, Samba is far more irreplaceable.

Lets be honest, 10-12 mil would not and could not be turned down.

Salgado would be a cracking signing!

Ps. Everyone on here should be going to the game on saturday. Unless you are financially unable, or live abroad, you don't really have an excuse - so I hope the vast majority of you will be there.
However, I strongly suggest you are a bit more positive and supportive of the players and team.
To give us tickets so cheap, only to be "rewarded" by moaning, whinging knob heads would be a disgrace!
All true Blues - if you get some idiot sat near you moaning and groaning at Andrews, Roberts, McCarthy, Pedersen etc and not supporting them - get them told!

hey roverspal...again, I agree with you, although the reason that we don't sign huntellar, pogrebnyak, van nistlerooy is that we consider the options very carefully, and weigh it up financially as well as 'on the field'. We need ideally to be signing players that will increase in value over their time with us, not just take big salaries, then leave for nothing. I'm not saying dont sign these players, but I am saying that there needs to be a lot of thought going into any signing that Rovers make, and I'm positive that the Board know more than we do about the finances, plus Sam has been brought in because of his proven track record with such players. Close to home examples that outweigh the Grabbi defecit dramatically are Bentley and Santa Cruz. Examples of 'shrewd' rovers signings are Nelsen, Samba, Ooijer, Andrews, Reid, Pedersen, Santa Cruz. All of these were'unknowns' that have been VERY shrewd investments by the club, its what we do best of all. We need to trust their judgement, Rovers are very successfull at what they do

If we'd have been offered £12m at the start of the transfer window i honestly think we would have sold but being so close to kick off, theres not a chance. Warnock will be made to wait for the move, thats if he really wants to move to Villa. Big Sam knows there wont be enough time to get a player in of Warnocks quality settled into the squad.

Warnocks the heart and soul of our Rovers side and all the antics above about him 'having one bad game',does NOT make him a bad player.

Hopefully Warnock will have a more attacking role this season with Givet at left back. Lieutenant Nelson at the back and Captain Warnock just inside Peds on the left. Oooohh i cant wait

I know I'll get stick for this, but selling Warnock may not be a bad idea. Yes, he was arguably our best player last season, but we have signed an equally good if not better left back in Givet and I don't believe warnock is a particularly special midfield player. If we could get a big fee for him it may be worthwhile. We could spend it on improving the midfield which at the moment is full of sicknotes. Dunn, Grella and Reid are liabilties at the moment.

I can't believe this story. I know your club has no money and is in a depressed state, but surely they wouldn't contemplate selling players to bring in a 33yr old has been. The only player you have who would attract any sort of fee is Warnock who's worth about 3-4 million but is it really worth selling him for a player you say you don,t need.

What have all these players in common? that’s right they all can play full back. So why would we buy another! Especially an ageing one at that, oh, to afford this ageing players wages we have to off-load a couple of (younger)squad players!-this to me doesn’t make any sense at all- could be a smoke screen and all this cr@p in the press “4million” blah blah.. Is just that cr@p, not an ounce of credibility in the story-these days teams play their own fans -if they don’t then there’s so much to lose!-my guess (the Cynic in me -only a guess) it’s a done deal & villa will get a certain full back for 6/7m- Rovers having been seen to play hard ball and keeping respectability with their own fans! Then ex-Galacticos

As white as I am I find views like this more appropriate for the BNP.please understand its not political corectness its people who we share our town with, who we not only live with but many an instance the DR's we see save our lives.Do you and Miller have a vendetta against Oz. I DO NOT SHARE YOUR VIEWS and hope other ROVERS FANS DONT.
Also there is a prayer room in the new hospital, please tell them you dont want to be treated by people who go in there.Or like your friend Miller does he think the DR's who go in there are going in for a coffee break?
Prayer room in a hospital - that makes sense. People can be in hospital a long time, and by the very nature of hospitals, people will be sick and dying.

Prayer room in a football ground is ridiculous and pathetic and little more than a publicity stunt.

Well said ROVERSPAL. MORST and his little 'pals' truly are a bunch of dullards. When they're not uttering their usual bland 'stay positive' platitudes and questioning the 'loyalty' of fans who don't agree with them, they instead think it's clever to indulge in subtle forms of racism (Miller, Mshaw and Morst have all done it on this thread). The messageboard is here for ALL Rovers fans to air their views on footballing issues, not for you MORST, MILLER, JEPPO, ROBBIE etc to patronise anybody who isn't in your little love-in. OZTHEMAN may rant occasionally (well..everyday!) but it's a lot more interesting than reading your drivel. As for the thread at £12m I'd bite Villa's hand off. Givet is a far better left-back in my humble opinion, and we could use the money to buy a quality central midfielder. If Sam can bring in one in we could be in for a very good season.

Pedersen always plays amazingly for Norway and crap for us. He has been doing it for about 2 years. He still looks lazy for Norway, but just looks like a completely different player who can cross and take decent free kicks. As for the prayer room thing, I agree it is stupid to have one in a football ground, but if it attracts Muslim fans then I don't care. I am not racist, I just don't like religion and certainly think it should be separated from football.
