SAM Allardyce insists Blackburn Rovers have to be ready for the unexpected as he urges the club’s board to help him ‘seize any golden opportunities’.
The Rovers boss’s £13million transfer kitty is expected to be needed in his search for Roque Santa Cruz’s replacement but he has stressed the importance of being ready for anyone.
While a new striker is obviously Allardyce’s priority, he has revealed the search continues for fresh blood in other positions and believes there could be some ‘last minute gems’ on the market.
Allardyce has already admitted most of his remaining budget will have to be spent on increasing his team’s firepower, leaving him needing to trade to recruit elsewhere, but hasn’t ruled out pleading for more cash if the need be.
He insists it is impossible to know exactly what areas of the squad will be strengthened this summer after admitting sometimes opportunities arise you can’t afford to turn down.
He said: “What I have to convince this club to do is when that person arrives to take it irrespective of whatever position we are in, we just take it.
“Because sometimes the one opportunity comes your way and it is a golden opportunity.
"You haven’t planned for it, you don’t know it is round the corner but all of a sudden if appears.
“It is a shame if you can’t take it for whatever reason because it could be a quality player when it comes around.
“We know though we need to bolster the front line and the squad in general.
"In the end quality is one of the most important things we are looking for and that is why it becomes so very difficult but I think we will be successful in the end.”
Allardyce’s striker search is continuing to frustrate for a variety of reasons, but the Rovers boss remains confident it will end in success for the Ewood Park outfit.
He claims Rovers have got plenty of selling points, despite their limited budget, and insists he will eventually attract the right men to East Lancashire.
“We would try to bring them to the training ground first because as soon as they walk through this door, there are not many places better than this in Europe,” he said.
“I think that in itself is a great selling point for this football club.
"I think the next one is the Premier League. It is the best league in the world - no doubt about that.
“It is the most watched league in the world, it gives you the biggest profile in the world and a player loves a nice profile, well most do.
“Then myself as a manager. I am telling them how much they are going to enjoy working for this football club and how much they are going to enjoy playing their football here.
“While it might not be the biggest club they have played for, they will have as good a time here as anywhere else and if that is the case we will be very successful together.”
Tottenham’s Darren Bent is still believed to be on Allardyce’s wish-list although they are growing increasing fearful Sunderland’s interest could price them out of the chase.
Sunderland front man Kenwyne Jones was also linked with Rovers in the national media yesterday, although it is understood Rovers have so far not made any enquiries about the striker.
Jones would fit the bill in terms of what Allardyce is looking for though and should Sunderland indicate a willingness to sell, Allardyce would be interested in making his interest known.
The Rovers boss said: “We have accumulated lots of prices in and around what players might cost, in terms of salaries, transfer fees, agent fees etc.
"When we have got that broad based figure then we start making one or two more serious enquiries into the player and the club he is at.
"Then we move it on from there.
“I generally get about 95 per cent rejection and five per cent successes.
"That is the norm. I think that eventually when you are serious enough and determined enough in pushing the profile of the club and the Premier League we will be successful as quick as we possibly can.
“Sometimes it takes longer than we want though. For instance, I spoke to Nicholas Anelka on May 20 and he signed on August 28.
"Negotiations are always long and arduous and tedious and that is why I am glad I leave that to John Williams.”

Of course I meant to boost the kitty so we can bid for Crouch.
HAC - Jones is a decent shout too but I would still move Andrews on with Grella, Emerton, Dunn and Reid plus the two new signings set to play more part next season.
We need that big signing to boost those ST sales to 20,000 and if that means sacrificing the poor mans Mark Atkins I would do it. Please stop with the insults HAC - you talk some tripe at times as well!

Cant belive he is not going for Frazer Campbell, there is no way hes staying with united, he is relativley cheap around 6mil (the same price they are quoting for Zamora) and a good age. If Sam can turn Kevin Davies into a goalscorer he can turn Campbell into the next Shearer.

Bent, to me anyway, is a box player, a goalscorer but possibly too similar to McCarthy. Jones on the other hand is al lot more physical, similar to Roberts in some ways, but much better quality.
Personally, I would sign someone who can do the spade work for McCarthy but is better quality than Roberts, as there is no doubting Benni's qualities. Jones or Beattie would fit the bill for me.
Never been a big fan of Beattie but he's proven at this level and you know what you're gonna get from him so I think, as we have a tight budget, I'd try and get Beats and then anyone else is a bonus.

Its looking more likely that Sam will either sign an older player on a pay as you play type deal, or a relatively untried from overseas, who would be cheaper. Sam seems happy for all speculation to go on about the above, but I imagine Rovers are working on totally different deals somewhere, keeping things quiet until its signed.

the only thing im angry about is the fact that keith andrew is still a rovers player, and to those who think he's good are just easily pleased, forgive me for having a swipe at him but i expect more from a midfeilder than just running arround !!

Sam is playing the long game with a very decent sized kitty come the right moment. Don't rule out Crouch because BS never misses a chance for a compliment about him! But if someone pays daft money we wait because we have a decent fund left above many teams when the silly money has been spent.

I would rather see us move for Crouch, who has scored goals wherever he's played (when given the chance) - even for England. Bent had one good season for Charlton, but has done next-to-nothing at Spurs - and is certainly not worth the 12-13m they seem to be talking about in the press.
Fraizer Campbell would be a gamble - he did little at Spurs (see a pattern here?!) and his only regular football came in Hull's promtion season where he did well - but as we know, scoring goals in the Championship doesn't mean you'll score them in the Premier League.
I'm sure Allardyce has many more targets than the ones discussed on these pages, so it wouldn't surprise me if we got someone we haven't even thought about. How about Bellamy from City? Could have a chance, especially if City get Eto'o. It's a long shot, but he'd give us the pace we are lacking, as well as goals.
Whoever we sign, it has to be a proven striker. Rovers have a great chance here to get a big-name in to boost the fans' excitement ahead of the new season - and perhaps push along those season ticket numbers too. Don't blow it Rovers!

I am not saying we are going to be in the top 6. But we can get back into the top 10 - 12 and that puts us above many teams in Europe in terms of resources because of the success of the premiership. If we can pull another Benni or Santa out of the hat for £3m then great!

Do you really in all sincerity think Rovers can afford, or more importantly attract a top class striker?
Tottenham have reportedly turned down a 12m bid from Sunderland for Bent- they want to recoup the 16m they paid Charlton A. -What kind of wage would Bent command? He’s reportedly on about 60/70k a week at Spurs -so he wouldn’t come for less wages! -so in “reality“ to compete to sign a player like Bent-we’d have to fork out 14/16m transfer fee and a four year contract worth…3.5m-that word “reality” crops up again!! -it would take a near 20m outlay to get a player like Bent and maybe similar figure to attacked Crouch-all this is speculation -they might not fancy a dark and wet Mill town in November anyway! -what’s the competition -the cosmopolitan city that is London or Sandbanks!! Hmm
I agree though, the route to go is to find another “unknown” gem from somewhere- don’t forget Mark Hughes found our “unknown” gems -Ally dice has no such history of pulling these types of players out of the bang -his management style is to get sell by date types players from “bigger” clubs or players with a complex personality which other clubs are afraid to gamble on!

Crouch, Bent and Jones prices will fall unless someone is panicked into paying a silly price. Big Sam will hopefully be there to mop up!
The one thing that needs changing is the transfer window to end before the season kicks off as we have this bluff game until Aug 31st nowadays which is stupid.
The worst performer for the Cricket team today has been the BBC weather forecaster! I have had to get the brolly out its like the Rivera and we are getting convicted!
