SAM Allardyce insists Blackburn Rovers have to be ready for the unexpected as he urges the club’s board to help him ‘seize any golden opportunities’.
The Rovers boss’s £13million transfer kitty is expected to be needed in his search for Roque Santa Cruz’s replacement but he has stressed the importance of being ready for anyone.
While a new striker is obviously Allardyce’s priority, he has revealed the search continues for fresh blood in other positions and believes there could be some ‘last minute gems’ on the market.
Allardyce has already admitted most of his remaining budget will have to be spent on increasing his team’s firepower, leaving him needing to trade to recruit elsewhere, but hasn’t ruled out pleading for more cash if the need be.
He insists it is impossible to know exactly what areas of the squad will be strengthened this summer after admitting sometimes opportunities arise you can’t afford to turn down.
He said: “What I have to convince this club to do is when that person arrives to take it irrespective of whatever position we are in, we just take it.
“Because sometimes the one opportunity comes your way and it is a golden opportunity.
"You haven’t planned for it, you don’t know it is round the corner but all of a sudden if appears.
“It is a shame if you can’t take it for whatever reason because it could be a quality player when it comes around.
“We know though we need to bolster the front line and the squad in general.
"In the end quality is one of the most important things we are looking for and that is why it becomes so very difficult but I think we will be successful in the end.”
Allardyce’s striker search is continuing to frustrate for a variety of reasons, but the Rovers boss remains confident it will end in success for the Ewood Park outfit.
He claims Rovers have got plenty of selling points, despite their limited budget, and insists he will eventually attract the right men to East Lancashire.
“We would try to bring them to the training ground first because as soon as they walk through this door, there are not many places better than this in Europe,” he said.
“I think that in itself is a great selling point for this football club.
"I think the next one is the Premier League. It is the best league in the world - no doubt about that.
“It is the most watched league in the world, it gives you the biggest profile in the world and a player loves a nice profile, well most do.
“Then myself as a manager. I am telling them how much they are going to enjoy working for this football club and how much they are going to enjoy playing their football here.
“While it might not be the biggest club they have played for, they will have as good a time here as anywhere else and if that is the case we will be very successful together.”
Tottenham’s Darren Bent is still believed to be on Allardyce’s wish-list although they are growing increasing fearful Sunderland’s interest could price them out of the chase.
Sunderland front man Kenwyne Jones was also linked with Rovers in the national media yesterday, although it is understood Rovers have so far not made any enquiries about the striker.
Jones would fit the bill in terms of what Allardyce is looking for though and should Sunderland indicate a willingness to sell, Allardyce would be interested in making his interest known.
The Rovers boss said: “We have accumulated lots of prices in and around what players might cost, in terms of salaries, transfer fees, agent fees etc.
"When we have got that broad based figure then we start making one or two more serious enquiries into the player and the club he is at.
"Then we move it on from there.
“I generally get about 95 per cent rejection and five per cent successes.
"That is the norm. I think that eventually when you are serious enough and determined enough in pushing the profile of the club and the Premier League we will be successful as quick as we possibly can.
“Sometimes it takes longer than we want though. For instance, I spoke to Nicholas Anelka on May 20 and he signed on August 28.
"Negotiations are always long and arduous and tedious and that is why I am glad I leave that to John Williams.”

Jones and Beattie up front for us this season would batter opposition defences and with Roberts to step up should one of them get injured along with Benni coming off the bench to nick a few goals, I think we would have a very good season.

I thinks we need to keep hold of Andrews as backup to the first team he is useful, his wages will be a lot lower than the other bench warmers next year (Dunn, Reid, Emerton) and he can do a job in a few different positions, and you can argue he was one of the better players last year, Cant belive he is not going for Frazer Campbell, there is no way hes staying with united, he is relativley cheap around 6mil (the same price they are quoting for Zamora) and a good age. If Sam can turn Kevin Davies into a goalscorer he can turn Campbell into the next Shearer.

I think jones/bent/crouch/be attie will all be relatively over priced, plus other clubs will be in for them. Can't see us getting any of these, unless its a 'bargain', which to me would be less than £6m. Its looking more likely that Sam will either sign an older player on a pay as you play type deal, or a relatively untried from overseas, who would be cheaper. Sam seems happy for all speculation to go on about the above, but I imagine Rovers are working on totally different deals somewhere, keeping things quiet until its signed.

Marghen...hey, its not often I agree with you, but I think you're totally right. If decent english managers like bruce and harry are at wealthy clubs, yet are still looking to get rid of jones/bent, then they can't be that good!! Thats my point really, I think Sam is just paying lip service to this speculation, while other stuff is going on in the background. If there wasnt this speculation, everyone would be going mad!

Some of our fans have ideas of grandeur & need reality check!!- we are a small provincial town club batting above our weight with the big boys-gone are the days when we could mix it with the elite of English football financially!
The big hitters in the Prem now are Man c- Chelsea- Sunderland-followed by Man U, Liverpool, Spurs, Arsenal, Villa -the rest of us I’m afraid to say are mopping up the crumbs!!!

It may appeal to Crouch / Bent (after recent seasons at Liverpool / Spurs) to be a star in a team where they play every week and are wanted not just as bench warmers - come on we have to sell the positives. Yes we are not the big spenders over all but we are largely debt free with a great ground and training complex good established premiership quality squad and can afford several decent players. And we have a BIG kitty to spend compared to most now! 31st....jeppo wrote: Marghen...hey, its not often I agree with you, but I think you're totally right. I doubt Bent or Crouch will be appearing at the rovers, the transfer fee is one issue but you could say a more major issue is the wages these guys will be on. Rovers have a strict structure and i would be surprised if Crouch or Bent are on less thank 60K a week (Crouch moved from Liverpool where he was on decent and also Harry 'face like a bag of sick'Redknapp isn't shy on spendine, Bent £18mil so wages will reflect. I personally think that Sam will buy from abroad (maybe more than one), probably nowhere near the £13mil but I think it will excite the fans if it's someone to look forward to.

Former Charlton Athletic striker Francis Jeffers has signed for Premiership rivals Blackburn Rovers. The 25-year-old hitman agreed a two-year deal with an option to extend for a further 12 months. His contract is ‘heavily incentivised’ for the player to perform, Rovers chairman John Williams confirmed. Jeffers was released by the Addicks at the end of last season. The former Arsenal and Everton forward said: “It has been a busy couple of days but what a fantastic move for me, I can't wait. “I spoke to a number of clubs but once I spoke to Mark Hughes my mind was made up as to where I would go. “I've had a difficult couple of years but I've no doubt that I can do it given a fair crack of the whip here I'm sure I can get back to my best and take this club forward.” He will team up with former Gillingham goalkeeper Jason Brown who signed a four-year deal with Rovers last month.
