Big Sam: We may wait till end of window for new Blackburn Rovers striker

BLACKBURN Rovers boss Sam Allardyce may be prepared to wait until August 31 in his bid to sign a proven goalscorer.

Rovers are thought to have a summer transfer budget of around £13m and, although they have already spent approximately £4m in transfer fees to bring in Gael Givet and Steven N’Zonzi, no more transfers are expected until a striker has been secured.

Allardyce, who has started to look overseas for a replacement for the departed Roque Santa Cruz, is keen to use his budget to sign the highest quality player available.

And, although he would like to have a new forward on board in time for the first game of the season on August 15, he is realistic that he may have to wait until transfer deadline day - four league matches into the campaign - for prices to tumble.

“You’ll see it build and build until August 30 again and that’s when it goes into mayhem and mad city,” said Allardyce, who takes his squad to Austria tomorrow for a week-long training camp.

“I don’t want to be involved at the back end of August if I can help it but that’s when actually they don’t get more expensive, they get an awful lot cheaper.

“So we may have to, but I hope not.”

Allardyce, who has indicated that Ruud van Nistelrooy would interest him if the Real Madrid striker was prepared to take a pay cut, is not ruling out bringing in an experienced front man.

But, with current strikers Jason Roberts and Benni McCarthy, both 31 years of age, he may be tempted to opt for a player who has not yet reached his peak.

He said: “It’s going to be the most crucial decision I make this season, because while we’ve got two very experienced Premier League strikers in Jason and Benni, they are the only two front men with goals in them we have.

FROM BACK PAGE “Dioufy can play up there but he’s not a goalscorer and obviously we know Chris Samba can play up there if we need him to but he’s not going to score that many goals.

“We want a front man who is going to make a big contribution.

“I think we will have to explore all areas. That particular area of experienced ones but also we have to explore somebody who is going to be risky but a calculated risk we have to take on a younger striker if there’s one there.

“If we find one that bit younger, we’re putting them in place for not just next season but for many seasons to come because it’s not too far away with Benni and Jason moving into their 30s that we would have to replace those players.

“Hopefully not next season or the season after that, but with your strikers moving into their 30s now means you have to get somebody to come and back them up.”

Many of the forwards Rovers have been linked with have been traditional target men but, despite losing the aerial ability of Santa Cruz, Allardyce says he is not restricting his search to that type of striker.

He said: “I think you can’t be putting a specific type of centre forward you would want because now you are going to limit yet again the availability out there.

“If you say ‘I only want a big man’, then you’re going to knock 50 per cent of the strikers off the list straight away.

“I think he has to have the qualities that are needed to compete at the highest level as well as the desire and the goalscoring ability.

“It’s that type of player I’m looking for. Whether that’s 5ft 10in or 6ft 3in, that wouldn’t particularly worry me “If the quality of the player is better than what we’ve got and is better than what we’ve got, then if he’s small, medium or large, I’ll go and get him.”

Midas - we could sign an ex Burnley player as an alternative.

He is good at getting "high" in the area.....covers all the grass, and is no dope (well he is actually)

He is a home loving lad and enjoys sharing a joint with his friends and family every sunday lunchtime.

Midas - I guess you don't know what its like to have the problem of spending £10m plus on a new striker. BS is right we have to be patient and get it right.

I have a feeling Crouch wants to play for us and we are waiting for Portsmouth to quote a more reasonable price.

Morst - you haven't got £10m+ to spend on a striker. Given the other positions that need to be filled you will only be able to spend £6 - £8m at most, which to be fair isn't exactly chump change but isn't enough for a top class international player (or even Crouch!.

Is BFS hoping that getting the lad from Chelsea will give him some breathing space?

We are very poor in the striker area one can score but won't work, one will work but cant score. We need players like Shearer,Newell,Sutto
n,who worked their socks off and scored goals for fun.I know we havn't got the cash to buy that sort of class but we can't afford one horse strikers.Sam got the best out of Kevin Davis because the work ethic was there he just harrnessed it right.A young Davis will suit me fine, big fees are not always the answer, its the potential you can see for the money.

I maybe a season out, but I still rate BMc as 'a quality/class striker' who should he get his mind right will terrorise defence's this season.

Class is permanent & genius is flawed as the the saying goes..

I personally have never lost faith in this guy esp last season when he had two bereavements to deal with & his obvious dip in form/commitment & the fact that the offer of top of the tree footy eg the Chelski move had passed him by.

Yes people were not happy over this at the time, but his words on signing the new contract 'I'm now at Blackburn for most likely the rest of my career & I intend to do my very best for this club'

Last season was a nightmare for Benni, but again when he played he came up with the goods & as much as people on here give him a hard time I see in the main that this guy on the match is given great support by the fans because we all know that he his 'CLASS'

I will stand by him again this season & injury/suspension aside will notch 15/16 goals.....

We talk of a new striker, but Benni will be at it this season............

Just a thought :)

Eddie, your right I'm off back down to the D/E for any latest transfer activity :)

Wild Rover,NickH right on both counts & it's good to see that we still have a positive with Benni. I guess it is purely frustration on all our parts regards Benni, rather than a Bentley or Cruz scenario?

I argued strongly for BMc 07/08 season when the problems arose with him. Obviously I wish he would just go about his business without all the controversy that surrounds him!!

As NickH points out he his deadly when he goes about his game & although I wont compare him to Shearer I would go so far as to say that he gives me that same feeling when he plays with hunger in his belly & that on a consistent basis would be great because we all know what it was like when Shearer was plying his trade here? A good bet we would see a goal from him :)

Benni is that good & like you say WILD ROVER he has to get his head in gear, give us some of that anticipation for the match & hey 'Happy Days'....

Come on 'Benni Bantam' Blackburn & Sth Africa expects !!

Oh yeh WildRover that is spot on about Gally - He can do a sterling job with his delivery form wide positions & he always gives it his all with an added bonus that he knows were the net is.

He was touted a few seasons ago that he was the best finisher at the club :)

I hope he takes the chance & like I said a few weeks ago, the benefits for all concerned will be awesome....

Looks like Zaki is on his way for 6million, dont know how much truth in it but he fits the bill, Available fairly cheap, Premiership experience, and looks like all the bigger clubs who were chasing him at the start of the season have forgot about him. And Fatty said he was looking abroad. Also after some 16 year old called Vastic.

Have to go with you on Benni Woody. If BS can find the motivation key and system to suit Benni is pushing a 20 goal a season man.
How about Duffer to set them up - still going cheap at fire sale Utd? Then blow the £10m - £12m on big Crouchy and Duffer can drop them on his head to from either wing. With MGP corners, set pieces and throws and Diouf his usual pain and 4 new signings in midfield (Dunn, Reid, Grella and Emerton!)we could cause enough problems to get up to 7th or 8th.

Talking of Toons they have calculated M Owen cost them £41m over 4 years and scored 30 goals - OOCH!

security "busy-loan" Perhaps its a hint we should get Duffer on loan to take the wages off Toons!

Blackburn boss Sam Allardyce has informed Paul Gallagher he could yet have a future at Ewood Park.

Rovers' forgotten man looked set to leave the North West outfit when he spent almost the whole of last season on loan at Plymouth.

The Scottish striker impressed during his Championship sojourn and Allardyce is eager not to write him off just yet.

With Roque Santa Cruz and Matt Derbyshire having left the club for pastures new this summer there is a vacancy in the club's attack and Allardyce has challenged Gallagher to seize an unexpected reprieve.

"It's down to Paul," Allardyce told the club's official website.

"He had one of the brightest futures of any young player here many years ago under Graeme Souness.

"If Paul wants to change his outlook on how he wants to develop his career, he is at a great place to do it.

"The talent is not in question, the desire to be a Premier League player is what Paul needs to have. If he can show that then we have a terrific player at Blackburn."

From reading this sounds like Fat Sam does have a lot of time for Gallagher. If anybody get the best out of gallagher I do believe it will be Sam. MANAGER Sam Allardyce insists striker Paul Gallagher could still have a bright future at the club.

The Scotland international spent most of last season on loan at Plymouth Argyle, but Big Sam is ready to give him a fresh chance to prove himself in pre-season.

The Rovers chief said: "It's down to Paul. He had one of the brightest futures of any young player at Blackburn Rovers many years ago under Graeme Souness.

"I remember him playing up front with Jon Stead and thinking 'Wow! What a partnership that is going to be for many years to come', but it hasn't materialised.

"There is only one person who can change that, and that is Paul himself.

"I hope he has looked in the mirror this summer and said to himself: 'Why am I not playing at Blackburn Rovers when I was playing in the Premier League, the top league in the world, three or four years ago when I was three or four years younger than I am now?'

"So if Paul wants to change his outlook on how he wants to develop his career, he'll be at a great place to do it with me because, if a player wants to get the maximum out of himself, I know how to give him the opportunity to do that, as I've done with many players before.

"The talent is not in question, the desire to be a Premier League player is what Paul needs to have. If he can show that then we have a terrific player at Blackburn Rovers.

"So I'm looking forward to working with him in pre-season, and I'm looking forward to seeing if I can see that determination, and that attitude to use the ability that he has got in the Premier League, because the ability he has is Premier League quality."

I think you are stretching the point a bit. Carlos Kickaball is a common generic term for a relatively unknown foriegn player that comes to play in England for the financial rewards. I don't think anyone was calling Harry Enfield and Paul Whitehouse when they created the comic character.

Not readily agreed with you in the past, but that is quality.

Midas talks of having a 15 goal striker, I presume he is referring to Fletcher who could barely muster that in the Scottish Pub League. A rude awakening is on the horizon come August for the mob up the M65. Worlds apart are the Premier and the Championship. Jansen got nearly 30 goals in that division and then just broke ten Premier League goals the season after. Let's see how many of them stick their heads above the parapet then. Not too many I am guessing.

Woody- Good call on Benni. The guy has been class all his career. Stay fit and he will give you 15 a season.

Not sure on Duffer, Crouch, Zigic etc. As for Van Nistelrooy, he is not due to be fit until after the transfer window closes, so is expected to stay at The Bernabeau until January according to Graham Hunter( Spanish correspondent on Talksport)

God alone knows where we are going to gwt a striker from, just makes you realise the magic that Sparky had in pulling Benni and RSC from relative obscurity. This is the road we need to be persuing. A star that needs some TLC and nursing back to full fitness or a rough diamond that came be trained on. We will then lose them in 2-3 years, as I posted on another page, but this is Rovers lot in life now. We need to trade this way to survive in this league. Somepeople nee to realise we ARE a feeder club, albeit a stable well run one.

Midas(s) how on earth do you arrive at 'Downhill slope'?

What is your evidence for that?

Midas(s) what is your reasoning for 'on the up'?

Leeds, Sheff Wed, Norwich, Reading, WBA, Southampton etc etc have all had tests in the Prem & failed.

Why?

I seem to remember they to built for the future with players or more to the point untested players!!

If your buys were of high calibre they most certainly would not be going to Burnley. The nature of today's game states that the cream of the crop ply there trade at all the top clubs throughout Euro.

You have grabbed no-one of proven Prem quality, or do you bank on them being an unknown quantity , a little like Hull?

Learning on the job sorta speak?

Do you really think that you will go to AFC, as an instance this season & come away with anything or CFC or MUFC, MCFC,THFC,LIVERPOOL,
WHUFC,EVERTON,BRFC,F
ULHAM etc

These are clubs who are well established with proven managers who have managed at the highest level year on year with some of the finest footballers available.

You go in as novice right the way through the team, with one or to exceptions.

Dont kid yourself kid, worry is a big part of the Prem league for every supporter in that league, regardless of which position they may hold.

You see the problems that exist down at Ewood regards 'HARD CASH' ? I will have you a little bet now that you lot wont compete year on year?

Why? Well you tell me?

Rivalry, fierce - Ok, but dont come on here spouting sheeeeeeeeeeeeet about something that you only read about until this season.

Go on another clubs forum in the Prem & speak your words of wisdom to them & see what comes back at you?

A.Wenger said about 6/7 years ago, the rivalry AFC/THFC is all well & good, but the bigger picture dwarfs all of that & my players will rise above that whike still enjoying the moment.

I seem to recall that thug Ball taking Dunny out when we dicked you at the Turf & I seem to recall our promotion that season.

We are Premier League(FACT) by establishing the name BRFC over the years.

You my friend are novice by a long way have it all to do & that wave of yours will soon be beached if your lot go into the season with your attitude.

Hey RTH how you doing?

Now he is a classic case in point of class, but flawed, yet we know he can produce when it matters.

Now that is proven 15 goal player in some of the toughest leagues in the world under some of the finest managers around.

We should be rightly supportive of this guy because as we see at present, Sam is scouring the world for a top class proven striker & coming up non-plussed !!

I have faith in Sam doing the business for us this coming season because as the latter part of the season quite clearly shows BRFC had Euro form. The players are looking good & talking positively for the coming season. That for me is all that I wish to see. Look back at the 08/09 season when Ince took over, we had reservations as to the season, so this season we have more to be optimistic over with a proven PREM MANAGER WHO KNOWS HIS STUFF. For that I am thankful.

They did it because Owen came out top and it was just Newcastle never made many chances!

But the real shock was Benni 2nd and Jason in 4th! Benni was double the conversion rate of Rooney for example. Kevein Davies did not feature!

Come on BS - you are supposed to be good at the stats -who needs a new £10m striker! We just need to make more chances and quality balls in - Duffer is going cheap!

Hope its not true,Says he could be coming saturday,And could be going on tour with team.
He is 36 years old now,He would be like bloody grandad to some of the younger players,Please let this not be true.....
Trev is right,We had a donkey in fowler,We dont need another.
He turns 36 next week too.

Why dont we go in for Martins, we could do with a pacy striker, great finisher too.

Duffer and Martins - take em off Skintcastles wage bill. We owe it to Duffer to release him from hell!

Vieri looked about 50 on Sky Sports this morning. He was class and certainly is one big guy but can he handle Premiership for first time at that age? Still no harm to let him try and impress on the pre season tour.

Midas gets a lot of stick on this site just because he's from burnley but he does speak a lot of truth in what he says. I think Blackburn Rovers WILL struggle to attract a top notch striker. What have they got to offer a top centre forward. They are in a very unfashionable and old town (even one of your ex-players said its a dump). The manager has a reputation for long ball boring football and they cannot fill the stadium. They dont have any cash to buy players and are known as a selling club.I think Blackburn wont even finish above Burnley this season. I will be there in August to watch City MULLER Rovers.
So you're sticking up for Midas...and?

1. I don't believe you're a City fan because the tone of your post is too bitter, you are obviously a six fingered dingle.

2. On a Rovers board who cares what a Burnley fan or a 'city' fan think?

3. Noone knows who Sam will sign so what's the point? You are HOPING he doesn't sign anyone of proven quality, that's the truth sonny.

Not seen it yet, got a link?

Incidently, Pedersen happens to be the second player who has taken the most shots but has still not scored. (Downing came top)

VIERA is managed by Ibrahaim Ba who played for sam at Bolton so maybe its just a favour to keep him fit.Even at 36 his wages will still be high, can't say I'd be thrilled if we signed him.

Shock - Any knockers of Benni and JR are in for a shock this morning. I know statistics and all that but this morning Sky have just done the top 5 Prem strikers based on conversion of chances. 31st...
I'm not surprised KEVEIN DAVIES did not figure.
