Burnley sign Newcastle United defender

YOUNG defender David Edgar will be among the new signings as Burnley begin their preparations for the Premier League today.

The 22-year-old penned a four-year deal after his Newcastle United contract expired yesterday, and will team up with his new Clarets colleagues when players return for pre-season training at Gawthorpe this morning.

Among them will be fellow newcomers Tyrone Mears and Steven Fletcher, who smashed the club’s transfer record when he completed a £3million move from Hibernian on Tuesday night.

It was third time lucky for manager Owen Coyle in landing Edgar, following two previous loan attempts for the 6ft 2ins Canadian centre half.

“I think he knew from day one we liked him; he’s coming to a club that’s on the up with a group of players that are hungry,” said the Burnley boss of Edgar.

“We’re getting a young, talented centre back that’s looking to improve and take his game on.

“He’s at the right age, with Premier League experience - albeit a bit stop-start - but he’s been at a club like Newcastle trying to get ahead of defenders who are valued at £8m-£10m.

“He’s scored on a couple of occasions too - against Manchester United and Liverpool no less, and he’s one that’s only going to get better.”

His agent, Barry MacLean told Ontario newspaper The Record: “I’d say he’s pretty happy.

”We are looking for him to play regularly at this stage of his career.

”For him to play regular first-team football is critical for him.”

Edgar’s father Eddie played in goal for Newcastle and Hartlepool before emigrating.

Muppet, compared to Andy Van Der Meyde, who according to the media is a flop but could be on his way to deadwood to try and ressurect his failing career.Edgar is a great signing for us.Still theres no place like deadwood for a flop to go to and should fit in well with the rest of the flops there. And and the exciting style of football they play. hoofers direct. UTC

Nevermind dreamerboy, at least you'll be getting the last 3 minutes on MOTD next season. On second thoughts ,it may take a bit longer than that to get through all the goals that your crap goalies gonna ship in!

Lets face facts he made seven starts for newcastle cos they were that bad,The tea lady up there would have got a game,If they had registered her with the FA in time.

Captain of Newcastle reserves; part of Canada's World Cup squad; played out of position at Newcastle firsts at full-back when he finally got a go; scored goals against Liverpool and Man Utd in league.
And only 22 years old.
Very, very, promising. Well done, Owen.

Burnley’s policy of signing inexpensive, young, up and coming players is admirable. The newcomers signed so far should be hungry to prove themselves and have a potential sell-on value in a worse case scenario. They also address the issue of reducing the average age of the squad.

One thing OC should be mindful though is that the new players, or indeed the rest of the squad, have not had much premiership experience. OC may just have to spend that little bit more on attracting a couple “older hands” just to make that difference in what’s going to be a baptism of fire for sure

Ps. I bet you ain't got a season ticket either.

Native Eskimo Indians are supposed to have many different words to describe snow, because it's important to them. I figure that's why so many rovers fans feel they have to comment on Burnley FC articles - because it's important to them.

Rickly they are not quaking in their boots for the sensational signings of BRFC so far. A nobody and a has-been.
If last year was a big srtuggle for you this year will be a disaster.
Look to your own limitations and see the drop coming ever closer Muppet.

masher49.
It's a lot more simple than snow!
Rovers fans make a lot of noise to try and detract from their own teams onging misery.
You can compare their rantings to that of a bully - same thing.
By shouting long and hard enough they convince themselves all is well in their garden. Point is-it isn't.
We will have the elast laugh.

They won't be, but BFS and the other managers of last years struggling teams will be!! Yo0u have improved your squad by selling your best player (and Derbyshire) and signing someone that Everton only offered a 12 month contract to and "the next Dickson Etuhu" from a French 3rd Divisin team! Fergie will be sh****g himself!! lol
