I’ve heard a lot of talk of ‘bottle’ this last week, and not just comments from neighbours on the bulging state of our recycling bin, writes Simon Smith.

As regards the Rovers, I’d sooner plump for the words ‘lack of finishing power’.

That is the opposite of what those observant neighbours said regarding the contents of said recycle bin.

Yes, my constant pacing and jotting down of the increasingly obtuse promotion equations has really driven my good lady wife to drink.

As it stands, a win tonight against Peterborough, however scruffy, would put Rovers in a position of dominance and should finally shoo-off those pesky Salopians to the play-offs. I say ‘should’.

Nothing with Blackburn Rovers is ever straightforward.

Not many people cope well with pressure and some of the players are, at times, too aware of the magnitude of this run-in.

It’s easy to say they should play the game and not the occasion but if we think they don’t feel the static coming from the crowd then we are wrong.

Some say that these lads are on big wages and should be able to cope with pressure. I think they do.

Not many jobs entail 10,000 people sighing dramatically when you make a small error.

There is no ‘delete’ button or machine reset on the field of play.

This is not a moan at the fans. We have had a terrible few years and to keep turning up last season to watch an appalling side with an appalling manager play appallingly was beyond the call of duty.

Every one of us should be rewarded with promotion.

Those who now stay away from games have their reasons and we must respect them because if glory does come then they will miss out on something that they should be part of, as Rovers fans.

The finishing line is in sight and whether we stumble over it or race to it - let’s face it, we know which it will be - all that matters is that we DO get over it.

Then the only ‘bottle’ we need discuss is the one we have chilling in the fridge.

Unless Mrs Smith has already drunk it.
