SAM Vokes is targeting another chapter in Clarets folklore this season as Burnley seek to secure their highest league finish in 44 years.

Sean Dyche's side have regularly written new chapters in the Turf Moor history books over the past five years and striker Vokes has played his part in all of them, with 230 appearances for the club.

With 10 games of this season to go Burnley sit seventh in the Premier League and if they can maintain that it would be their highest top division finish since coming sixth in 1973/74.

And Vokes insists the Clarets are looking up rather than down, focusing on the eight point gap to sixth placed Arsenal instead of the one point cushion they have to Leicester City.

"The gaffer speaks about creating history and folklore a lot and that’s important for us," Vokes said of the target of a highest finish in 44 years.

"Over the last few years we’ve achieved a lot here but to finish that high in the Premier League would be amazing for a club like Burnley and hopefully we can achieve that.

"We’re constantly looking forward and looking at the team in front of us, we’re not looking back. As the season has gone so far it’s been important that we’ve pushed on and we’ve always looked above us.

"For us we’re definitely looking at sixth place."

Burnley remain in seventh place despite going 11 league games without a win this season, a run they were within minutes of ending against Southampton on Saturday.

But Vokes believes there is an understanding around Turf Moor that this season is still set to be a successful one.

"I think everyone understands, we say we’re on a bad run of results but we’re still seventh in the Premier League so it’s not a majorly bad thing, but it’s important we get back to performing well and picking up some results," the 28-year-old said.

"We’ve had a couple of bad results but we also drew with (Manchester) City a couple of weeks ago so it’s not all bad in there, it’s important we keep an eye on where we’re at.

"A couple of results and I’m sure we can be pushing the top six again.

"Some results recently haven’t been great for us but we’re still in seventh place and that shows how strong we’ve been this season overall."

Burnley haven't been helped in recent weeks by a string of injuries to key players, but Vokes is refusing to use that as an excuse.

"We’ve got a very strong squad now, we’ve got players who have come in and performed well, but we haven’t picked up the results we wanted, but some of the performances have been there for us," he said.

The next chance to pick up a first win since December 12 comes against Everton at Turf Moor on Saturday and Vokes is keen to see Burnley get back to winning ways, especially at home.

"Making Turf a bit of a fortress has been a big thing for us since we got into the Premier League," the Wales international said.

"We’ve done that, as well as picking up points away from home, this year."
