TONY Mowbray insists he would be happy were Rovers to make no more additions to their squad in January.

And while he is looking to make further moves before the window closes, he is also relishing the prospect of players returning from injury.

Rovers currently have six first-team players sidelined by injury, but bar Harry Chapman, the likes of Darragh Lenihan, Corry Evans, Peter Whittingham, Ben Gladwin and Marcus Antonsson should be back fit within the next month to six weeks.

And for Mowbray it is all about creating competition for places in all areas of the park.

He said: “If it stops where it is even, it’s okay, this group have shown how well they can adapt to what’s in front of them and we have five or six players on their way back within the next month or so.

“The competition will become strong.

“As I’ve said to the players they are not coming to our club to replace anyone, their workrate on the training ground is ultimately what will get them in the team and we’re trying to create competition.

“If there’s two or three players to a position then whoever works the hardest and gets the job done will be the one that’s selected.”

Mowbray is looking to overhaul the club’s recruitment process and has introduced a new scouting system which he believes will benefit for the club for windows to come. That relies on players being assessed before their names are circulated to Mowbray in a bid to ensure Rovers’ success rate is as high as possible.

“We have to make sure the names keep coming and the filter keeps chucking out names of high quality footballers that we can afford and there’s a menu to choose from,” he said.

“All I have to do then is decide on how the team is going to play, who fits the criteria of the position because in the opinion of the recruitment department they are the best five or 10 in that position, one might cost £1million, one might cost half a million, another might be £100,000 and two might be free transfers.

“Then you decide where you want to spend your budget, is it three quarters of it on a centre forward and then a little tiny percentage on a right back?

“The job of the recruitment department is to throw these names at me and that’s just about up and ready to go.

“It won’t really impact on this window, moving forward I’m sure we will get our recruitment right more often than we get it wrong.”
