THE Rolling Stones once had a song called You Can’t Always Get What You Want.

Without boring you with the full lyrics, the key line repeated the title a couple of times before end with a line that said – and I’m paraphrasing here – you could get what you need.

Now what we want at the minute is a win. But what we probably need is not to lose (and maybe a couple of signings but let’s not be greedy).

Following the defeat at Palace on Saturday, during which we were as bad as we have been in the first half, a few people on social media started to panic a little.

Yes, the loss meant we are now seven without a win but in all that time we haven’t moved from our perch in seventh spot.

Just because we’re had an incredible start to the season, it doesn’t give us a right to expect the second half to be the same.

There’s going to be bumps along the way and another could be on the horizon this weekend.

The will he/won’t he saga of Alexis Sanchez which seems to have been ongoing for the last couple of years could come to a conclusion this week… and it could mean him making a return to the Turf.

No, I’m not suggesting Mike Garlick and the board are suddenly going to sanction a mega-bucks move for the Chilean but if he does sign for Manchester United – as looks increasingly likely – then he could be in line for a debut here on Saturday.

And we know how that usually ends don’t we?

United looked fantastic against Stoke City on Monday night but the Potters didn’t put up much of an opposition.

Their new boss Paul Lambert – who our friends from down the M65 will know well – does seem a strange choice. Dare I say it, almost feels like the time we appointed Brian Laws once Owen Coyle had jumped ship for Bolton.

Seeing the Stoke fans grumble about their new boss does make me grateful that we’re not in a position looking for a new boss.

Football, a lot of the time, is about holding your nerve. That’s what we did with Sean Dyche when we were relegated and look at us now.

We might not get the result we crave on Saturday and we might not bring in all the players we want to before the end of January.

But we’re in arguably the best shape we’ve ever been in and that must count for something!
