ASHLEY Westwood will have to displace Jack Cork or Steven Defour to force his way into the Burnley side, boss Sean Dyche said.

Westwood impressed against Manchester City in the FA Cup fourth round and had given Dyche a headache over his team selection for the trip to Selhurst Park to face Crystal Palace last weekend.

But despite his bright performance in a 4-1 defeat at the Etihad Stadium the former Aston Villa midfielder was back amongst the substitutes in south London and he didn't come on during the game.

Westwood might have hoped his display would be enough to force his way into the Premier League side but Dyche admits the form of Cork and Defour is keeping him out at the moment.

And the Clarets chief ruled out the prospect of the 27-year-old playing in the more advanced midfield role currently occupied by Jeff Hendrick, who has been struggling for form of late.

"He’s done terrific, but I think the form of Corky and Steven has been very good and I think he feels that role better than the more pushed forward role. He fits in those roles better," Dyche said of Westwood's position in his squad.

"But he knows the respect I have for him, he’s a fantastic professional."

Westwood has started three times this season, twice in the Carabao Cup and once in the FA Cup, but he has played just 57 minutes of Premier League football across seven appearances from the substitutes bench.

A £5million addition from Villa on deadline day in January last year, Westwood did start six Premier League games for the Clarets last season, including the final four of the campaign when Joey Barton's 18-month suspension ruled him out.
