ROVERS only have eyes on the top two - that is the message from defender Derrick Williams ahead of today’s home League One clash with Bristol Rovers.

Rovers made it back to back away wins in midweek with three points at Oxford on the back of victory last weekend at Bury.

That has cemented a place in the top six but it is the automatic promotion spots, currently occupied by Wigan and Shrewsbury Town, that are the main focus.

And with the games coming thick and fast, including a derby trip to Blackpool on Tuesday night in what is a game in hand for Rovers on many of their promotion rivals, left-back Williams is hoping to continue trimming the eight point deficit on the top two.

“We only look up, we only think about the top two, that’s the ones that we concentrate on the most,” Williams told the Lancashire Telegraph.

“We know that if we can play how we have in the last two games then we will be up there.

“Everyone is positive, we can see that top two and we’re coming for that.

“We’re all playing well, we need to keep this momentum now.

“We got six points in four days and we’re looking forward to Saturday.”

Rovers have been resilient on the road this season and will look to improve their home form ahead of Bristol Rovers’ visit to Ewood Park.

AFC Wimbledon and Doncaster have already won in East Lancashire this season and Williams wants to make Ewood a tougher place to come for visiting sides.

“We need to start scoring some goals at Ewood, that would be good for the fans and the form the front four lads are on I wouldn’t be surprised if we do,” he added. “We want to make Ewood a tough place to come and we want to try and stamp that on the home games.

“That’s our goal, we’re looking for to Saturday’s game now.”

Boss Tony Mowbray has switched things around so far this season and is yet to name an unchanged side in their 23 games so far.

Williams however is one of three ever presents alongside David Raya and Richie Smallwood, while Charlie Mulgrew and Elliott Bennett have missed just one game each.

Striker Joe Nuttall will hope to cement his place in the team and has done his cause no harm with five goals in seven senior appearances, just three of which have been from the start.

And after netting in the midweek win at Oxford, Williams added of the 20-year-old: “Joe has been excellent since he came into the squad, he got his head down, worked hard and is getting his rewards. He’s a very good striker.

“We showed what we can do (at Oxford) we have a strong squad and I think it’s coming together now. We have won two games away and have to take that now in to Saturday.

“We look a lot more solid, players know their roles and we’re performing.

“We’re playing as a team and hopefully we can carry that on.”
