I WAS sat in a cafe enjoying a coffee on Wednesday morning when I overheard a group of Rovers fans bemoaning the fact that a three-goal cushion had lapsed to a two-goal pillow on a couple of occasions at Oxford the evening before, writes Simon Smith

Given the joy Rovers have given me over the last week I laughed and carried on with my pre-work sloth.

Interestingly though, once the group had slimmed to two men sharing a muffin I asked them if they had not enjoyed the games this week and one suddenly became excited and enthusiastic about the future.

The other said “Nah, they never update Twitter quick enough when we are clinging on.”

I guess we have thrown a few points away over the years, but we were not clinging on for grim death at Oxford.

This is not a pop at the fans in any way but is a theory. A crowd tends to sway to the tune of the majority.

When Rovers are away the vibe is positive - the all-round nightmare at Oldham aside - but at home so many of those who assert their right to pay for a ticket and air their grievances hold sway in quieter moments.

Another canard thrown at Rovers by our fans is that we should be top because we ‘have the best squad’.

Do we? How does anyone know? Are we going off transfer fees? Past reputation? If so we could always get internationals like Anthony Stokes, Leon Best and Adam Henley back.

Many fans tell me that this is their club, not Tony Mowbray’s or Mike Cheston’s and so they’ll say what they want.

Well, it’s my club too, has been since 1975 when my dad first took me to Ewood Park. So I will say what I want too.

Get behind the team, your team, and play your part.

Many fans tell me ‘I’ve paid me money, I’ll say what I like.’

But I like it when fans are happy. I like it when fans are clapping. Better a happy clapper than a miserable cynic.
