CHARLIE Mulgrew believes Rovers’ dressing room downer despite the fine midweek win at Oxford shows the high standards that Rovers are setting.

The captain netted a brace in a 4-2 victory at the Kassam Stadium on Tuesday night which cemented Rovers’ place in the top six.

But Mulgrew admits there were some mixed feelings among the players after the match after Rovers, who raced into a 3-0 lead, conceded twice either side of Joe Nuttall’s fourth.

“I think the disappointment at half-time and full-time shows the standards that are set,” Mulgrew told the Lancashire Telegraph.

“We want clean sheets and want to win games in a better manner than we did.

“Maybe that’s a bit fussy and you have to take the wins as they come, but most important is that we’re winning games and we need to move on to Saturday now.

“We won 4-2 but the boys were still a bit down in the dressing room even though we scored four goals away from home and got three points.

“As a team we didn’t want to concede two goals but we won the game and if you offered us that before the game then we would have taken it.”

Mulgrew opened the scoring in the sixth minute and by the time he scored from the spot 17 minutes later, Rovers had opened up a 3-0 advantage.

Jack Payne reduced the deficit with the final kick of the first half before Jon Obika grabbed a late consolation for the hosts after Joe Nuttall grabbed his fifth of the season in between.

Scotland international Mulgrew also took his tally to five for the season with his double, his second brace of the campaign, but says he would have sacrificed his goals for another clean sheet.

He added: “I’m delighted with it but I would rather have won 2-0, not scored but not conceded, that’s my job not to concede and we did twice so we’re a little disappointed with that.

“We defend and attack as a team, I’m delighted with the goals and most importantly the three points.

“We took a bit of time to get used to the league and we move on to Saturday. It will be a difficult game and we have to take that in to Saturday.

“We have to show the determination, not be complacent for the match on Saturday and I’m sure the manager will have us up for that.”

Bradley Dack won Rovers’ first penalty of the season when he was brought down by Dwight Tiendalli just after the half hour mark.

Mulgrew and Marcus Antonsson debated over who would take the spot-kick, but it was the captain who picked up the ball before firing it in to the corner.

On the decision making, Mulgrew said: “I just thought I would take responsibility.

“I felt confident after scoring the first and I just thought if I feel like that then I might as well take it.

“It doesn’t matter who scores the goals, if it was Marcus who put the ball in the net then I would have been equally happy.

“I just thought we needed to get three up and I fancied I could do that so took the responsibility.”
