CRAIG Conway featured in 42 of Rovers’ 46 league games last season, but two separate injuries have seen him miss seven matches already this term.

A hamstring injury sustained in pre-season saw the Scot miss Rovers’ opening two games of the season but on his return to the side they chalked up back-to-back victories.

He was forced off in the second half of the win at Rochdale on September 9 with a hip injury which also saw him replaced in the AFC Wimbledon defeat the following week.

The 32-year-old is now trying to win his place back on the Rovers left, but manager Tony Mowbray is looking for Conway to add more a goal threat to his game.

Mowbray has praised Conway’s work ethic up and down the flank, but is looking for him to rediscover the form in front of goal which saw him net seven times last season having preferred Marcus Antonsson in Tuesday’s draw with Plymouth.

Mowbray said: “It’s a balance between what you might consider hardworking and honest wide midfield players who work up and down and give to both sides of the game, but he needs to be a goal threat otherwise I start to drift towards Antonsson who is a centre forward who has the athleticism to go up and down but can also get in the box and score a goal.

“Craig needs to show over the coming weeks that he’s a goal threat as well as the lad he is and the way he plays. It’s just trying to pick a team to win a football match and every game is different.

“You need to pick your team accordingly and if you don’t win then people will ask questions but that’s part of the business.

“I have had a good chat with Craig. I do feel as though the hip injury did knock him a little bit and he has been finding his way back a bit.

“I talked to him and he said he was feeling back to full throttle and he trained well, as he does every day, but I’m not sure he was at the heights he had showed early season.

“I think the injury did take a little bit out of him but he’s trained well and is in contention.”
