ROVERS captain Charlie Mulgrew has been named in the Scotland squad for next month’s crucial World Cup qualifiers.

Scotland host Slovakia on September 5, before travelling to face Slovenia three days later, as Gordon Strachan’s side conclude their Group F fixtures.

They go in to the two games sitting in fourth place, but know that victories against the two sides who sit one points above them in the table, would see them clinch second spot behind group leaders England.

That would give them a chance of making the play-offs, with the best eight second placed sides from the nine groups qualifying for the two-legged play-off to try and clinch their place in next year’s World Cup in Russia.

Mulgrew has started Scotland’s last five games, including four qualifiers, and will be hoping to keep his place in the side as he bids to win his 30th cap.

He was forced off in the second half of the 2-0 win over Malta on September 4 with an ankle injury, having played 90 minutes in the 3-0 win in Lithuania on September 1.

That kept him out of Rovers’ win at Rochdale on September 9, but he has featured in the three games since.
