ROVERS Under-23s boss Damien Johnson is still looking for more from his side, despite two five-star performances to start the season.

Johnson’s men followed up their 5-1 win over Wolves last Monday with a 5-3 success at Reading on Friday.

Joe Nuttall continued his goalscoring form, scoring twice from the penalty spot, with Joe Rankin-Costello, Stefan Mols and Matty Platt completing the scoring.

Rovers were never behind, helped by a 2-0 lead they built up inside the opening six minutes.

And while happy with the attacking play, Johnson admits they must become stronger at the back as their Premier League 2 Division Two campaign continues.

“Obviously I'm pleased to win the game,” he said.

“We scored some good goals and played at a good intensity, which made it difficult for them.

“I'm disappointed with the goals that we conceded, because they were soft goals. We can't always expect to score five goals in a game, so we need to be better defensively at times.

“I'm being critical, but that's my job. Overall, I'm really pleased.

“The front three are benefiting from the intensity of the whole team and the aggression in our play, both in and out of possession, and that's why we're getting these results.

“The challenge is can they keep repeating it and repeating it, and find that level of consistency in their performances?

“There's lots to be pleased about, but we are still looking for more in terms of their development and their cohesion as a team.”

The Under-23s are next in action on Friday when they travel to Southampton (7pm).
