STEPHEN Ward has capped a memorable few days by signing a contract extension at Turf Moor.

The left-back scored a stunning goal in the 3-2 win over Chelsea on Saturday and has now committed his future to Burnley, signing a deal until June 2019, with the option of a further 12 months.

Ward had signed a one-year extension in October last year to take him through to the end of this season, but the 31-year-old has been rewarded for his fine form since then by another new deal less than 12 months later.

The Republic of Ireland international has been at the club since August 2014 and he's pleased to have extended his stay with the Clarets.

"It’s great and long may it continue," he said.

"I’m delighted to have signed. It’s just great to be part of a club like this at the minute and hopefully we can have another successful season."

Ward may have already wrapped up the club's goal of the season award after his angled strike at Stamford Bridge, either side of a double for Sam Vokes, helped Burnley to a 3-0 lead over the defending champions at half-time.

"To find yourself 3-0 up at half-time at Stamford Bridge doesn’t happen very often," he said.

"I’ve not scored many like that in my career. I just took a short free-kick, played a one-two with Corky, who played a great ball back to me.

"Thankfully it sat up nicely and ended up in the back of the net.

"I was delighted – and Vokesy as well with two fantastic goals – and, all-in-all, we were just happy with the result."

Although Chelsea fought back in the second half the Clarets held on to claim all three points and a first away win of the season, having taken until the end of April last season to win on the road.

"We put in a great performance and we have to be very proud of what we did.

"There was a big thing made of our away form last year so it’s nice to get that first one under our belts and let’s roll on next week and have a big game in front of our home crowd."
