IRISH eyes were smiling on Turf Moor as Burnley continued their pre-season preparations with a draw against La Liga side Celta Vigo.

It was just like being back at Dublin youth team St Kevin’s Boys for childhood friends Jeff Hendrick and Robbie Brady as they netted a goal apiece, with scorer turning provider in each instance.

The double act was perhaps a sign of things to come this season, with Brady displaying the confidence he has built up through the summer with an energetic display and Hendrick looking dangerous in a more advanced role.

It was a new system for the Clarets against their Spanish visitors, which Dyche moving from the 4-3-3 he used from the start against Nottingham Forest on Saturday to more of a 4-4-1-1 here, with Hendrick pushed up in support of Sam Vokes, with Steven Defour and Jack Cork sitting in midfield.

There was also a change for Charlie Taylor as he lined up alongside Kevin Long at centre back.

And the evening proved to be a good test for Burnley against a side who had reached the last four of the Europa League last season.

Celta’s run to the Europa League semi-finals last year was based on a possession game but their confidence on the ball at the back was almost their undoing early on, with Burnley using their sharper fitness to impose a strong pressing game on the visitors.

The visiting defence were happy to return the ball to ‘keeper Sergio Alvarez but he was sloppy with it on a couple of occasions, including gifting it to Cork on six minutes, only to make amends with a routine save from the midfielder’s bouncing 20-yard volley.

Burnley had begun much the sharper of the two sides and struck on 13 minutes as Brady, Hendrick and Sam Vokes combined in a slick passing move before Hendrick teed up Brady to whip an effort across goal and into the top corner from 20 yards.

Celta had arrived late at Turf Moor after getting stuck in traffic on the M6 and they had made a pretty inauspicious start to proceedings, regularly gifting away possession. Their only threat was a low Iago Aspas free-kick which was comfortably held by Nick Pope.

As the first half progressed through the Galicians began to settle, with Pope again tested by Andrew Hjulsager, before Celta levelled just before the break.

A low cross from David Costas was partially cleared but Jozabed collected it on the edge of the area and rifled a shot towards goal which Pope couldn’t keep out.

Within a matter of minutes Celta had the lead. This time the goal came down the left, with Hjulsager the architect and he teed up Jozabed on the edge of the area with the former Fulham midfielder striking across the ball to arrow it into the far corner of Pope’s goal.

The Clarets were almost level early in the second half with Brady playing in Johann Berg Gudmundsson, who skipped past his man but saw Celta’s second half goalkeeper Ruben Blanco save from close range.

Burnley did level on the hour and this time Brady turned provider. Hendrick attempted to flick the winger’s free-kick and failed to make contact but saw the ball bounce back to him and he slammed home.

Celta then proceeded to make 10 outfield changes in one go and it was Pione Sisto who was the first of the new men to test Pope, but the Clarets’ goalkeeper was equal to his 25-yard drive in what was the last of the goalmouth action.
