SEAN Dyche paid tribute to goalkeeper Paul Robinson after the 37-year-old decided to hang up his gloves rather than extend his Turf Moor stay.

The former England goalkeeper has spent the last 18 months with the Clarets and he made three Premier League appearances for the club last season.

He had been offered a one-year extension to remain at the club but decided to retire instead as he struggles with a back injury.

"He’s been terrific for us," Dyche said of Robinson.

"His back was playing up so he made that decision, he didn’t think he could give everything and he’s been a top class pro for us. We respect that.

“He was terrific around the place and has filled in when he’s been called up.

“He’s supported the keepers with his knowledge and his background, and it is just a shame the injury has caught up with him.

“He would’ve definitely stayed with us, but it has been his decision to retire.

“He old enough and wise enough to have not put himself through anything if he couldn’t perform to his best.

“His level of professionalism to call it time now - instead of signing again and trying to get fit – that was fantastic.

“He said to me 'if I can’t do myself justice then I wouldn’t be able to do you and the lads justice', so his professionalism levels were great.”

Dyche said he was now looking to bring in another third choice goalkeeper.

"We’ve got the younger ‘keepers who are still in their development phase and probably need loan spells," the Turf chief said.

"It’s one we’ll be considering."
