SHEFFIELD United boss Chris Wilder refused to be drawn on the latest with his club’s pursuit for Darragh Lenihan, but is confident the Blades will be able to land their top targets this summer.

Rovers rejected United’s first two offers which fell way below the club’s valuation for the 23-year-old who still has two years left to run on his current deal.

Wilder is pursuing a move for Southend United midfielder Ryan Leonard, and revealed he is also in the market for another central defender after loaning out James Wilson to Walsall this week.

Lenihan is one of Wilder's top targets, but Rovers head coach Tony Mowbray has expressed his desire to keep the defender at Ewood Park.

Lenihan has figured regularly for Rovers in pre-season, clocking up 180 minutes in the three friendlies to date, more than any other player.

But as United's interest fails to go away, Wilder told BBC Radio Sheffield: “I’m not going to talk about other players, there’s certain players I have talked about because I have had to because it’s come from other things.

“We’re making bids all over the place, it comes from other people.

“We’re in for a central defender, a central midfield player and maybe something at the top of the pitch but there’s a hell of a long way to go.

“It’s still early in pre-season and we’re still actively trying to do some work.”

United’s transfer kitty has been boosted by sell-on clauses being activated following moves for former Academy graduates Kyle Walker and Harry Maguire to Manchester City and Leicester City.

And when asked if that money would be made available, Wilder added: “I’ve left that with the owners.

“We put together a presentation to them, because they’re the people that own the football club, for the players we want to get.

“We have a structure on how we try and get them.

“I’m confident that these players we are trying to get will be signed off.

“Any money that is available I will look to spend it wisely to make us better.”
