SAM Gallagher has signed a new long-term deal with Southampton after returning from a successful season-long loan spell with Rovers.

Gallagher netted 12 times during his time at Ewood Park where he became a hit with the Rovers fans for his tireless performances.

And Southampton have rewarded Gallagher for his development at Rovers with a new long-term contract, with the 21-year-old signing a four year deal which will run until 2021.

Gallagher had previously been linked with a summer move away from St Mary’s, but the Premier League club have secured his future as the forward returns to pre-season training with his team-mates.

Vice Chairman Les Reed praised Rovers for their part in Gallagher’s development.

He said: “The experience Sam gained last season at Blackburn Rovers in the Championship was invaluable, and it was clear to see the further improvement that he made in his game during that time. Not only did he score 12 goals but his general play was impressive and highlighted his capability.

“We believe he has many exciting years ahead of him, and that this is the ideal place for him to realise the great deal of potential that he still possesses.

“We are all looking forward to seeing Sam back here for pre-season and helping him take the next strides in his game at Southampton.”

Gallagher joined Southampton in 2012 after graduating through the Plymouth Argyle Academy.

He made his Saints debut the following November in a league cup tie against Sunderland, before scoring his first senior goal in the FA Cup win over Yeovil in January 2014.

His Premier League debut came later that month against Arsenal, with Gallagher scoring his first, and only, goal in the top flight in a 4-2 win over Norwich in March 2014.

Gallagher said: “I am absolutely delighted to sign this new contract. Especially to get it all done and dusted before the start of the season, because I can really get my head down and focus now on the year ahead.

“It shows the belief that the club have in me and I need to prove that now, which is what I am hoping to do in pre-season.”
