JEFF Hendrick admitted he ‘had a feeling’ his stunning strike against Bournemouth was going to win Burnley’s goal of the season award.

The midfielder’s effort against the Cherries at Turf Moor in December won a vote of guests at the club’s annual Player of the Year night last Sunday.

And the 25-year-old said he was delighted to win for his dipping volley that was the first in the Clarets’ 3-2 win .

“I had a feeling definitely,” he said. “There’s some great goals, some good team build-up and Steven’s (Defour) goal against Bristol City was very nice. I’m happy I won it.

“It started us on our way. There were a few other goals in the game.

“For me it was about controlling the ball, Lowts (Matt Lowton) played it in and I just thought I’d have a go, 99 times out of 100 they would go wide, over the bar or the keeper would catch it, so I was lucky on the day it went in.

“It’s always big winning in this league. It is tough at times. It was great for us to go and get the win.”

The strike was one of two Hendrick has scored for Burnley in his first season at Turf Moor after making a £10million switch from Derby County last August.

The Republic of Ireland international is happy with how his first campaign has gone and is looking forward to returning for another year of top flight football.

“I came here to play Premier League football. I went into a team and a great group of players and staff, the fans have been brilliant,” he said.

“I’ve enjoyed it and I’m looking forward to next year.”
