BLACKBURN Rovers must control what they can in the final two games of the season by collecting six points and taking their fate in to the final match at Brentford.

That’s the view of head coach Tony Mowbray after seeing his side draw for the seventh game out of the 13 he has taken charge of at Wolves on Saturday.

Aston Villa arrive at Ewood Park on Saturday (3pm) having helped out Rovers by beating near neighbours Birmingham City 1-0 on Sunday.

That kept the gap between Rovers and safety at two points, with Nottingham Forest a point better off than Blues after their win over Reading at the weekend.

And with six points to play for, Mowbray says that has to be Rovers’ target to give them the best possible chance of staying in the Championship.

“What we have to do is control what we can and that’s take six points from our next two games,” he said. “We have to aim to take six points and we will see what happens. We have to keep going.

“I think we showed that we shouldn’t fear playing anyone.

“Villa at home, we have to try and be positive and look to take it to the last day of the season and let’s see what happens at Brentford.

“We all know what we have to do.”

Rovers failed to score for the third game in their last six outings at Molineux, but kept a second consecutive clean sheet on the road.

They went with a three at the back system for a third straight game, but Mowbray is looking for more from the players within that system should he stick with it again when Villa arrive at Ewood this weekend.

Rovers managed just two shots on target during the 90 minutes on Saturday, and also failed to get up in support of Sam Gallagher who was too often found isolated in attack.

And Mowbray said: “We need more shots, more players breaking in to the box, releasing more midfield players in to the box, the wide players have to do that and not just stand and watch, and the frustration for me is that was all work that we had done.

“We have tried to work so that we have a minimum of four men in the box when the crosses come in and we didn’t quite have that.

“That’s playing this system, we have other ways of playing and we will have to find out this week in training how to best approach the Villa game and how can we ask questions of them and cause them problems.

“Do they need lifting? I don’t think so.  We went away to Molineux against a decent team and dominated for long spells.”

Rovers had to do without Connor Mahoney against Wolves, with the 20-year-old missing out with a thigh strain picked up in training last week.

Mahoney had started three consecutive games for Rovers prior to his injury, which Mowbray hopes it won’t keep him out of their final home game of the season.

He added: “I hope not – we will wait and see.

“It’s a thigh strain, so there was no point risking an injury like that.

“I’m hoping that he will train by the end of the week and be an option for Villa.”
