ROVERS Ladies defender Ellie Cook is hoping her side can clinch the FA Women’s Premier League North title with a clean sheet at home to Derby tomorrow (2pm).

Gemma Donnelly’s side go in to the game needing just a point to clinch the championship with five games of the season still remaining.

Rovers have conceded just 13 goals in their 15 league outings to date, but have kept just one clean sheet in their last eight in all competitions.

They drew 1-1 with Super League side Sheffield FC last Sunday in a friendly, having edged out West Brom in a nailbiting 3-2 win a week earlier.

And despite the three points, Cook wants the team to get back to keeping clean sheets.

“We need to go back to basics, we’re trying to play a bit too much,” she said. “We have a strong enough backline and a strong keeper, we’re striving to get a clean sheet again.”

A point for Rovers would confirm them as title winners and also secure a place in the Championship play-off game in May against the southern title winners.

Derby, who are new opposition for Rovers so far, this season, come into the game on the back of a 5-0 thrashing of Fylde.

Sitting third, 12 points behind second-placed Middlesbrough with three games in hand, Derby will feel they are still in the race for second.

Rovers and Derby will meet twice in the space of three weeks, with a game against Leicester sandwiched in between.

And Cook added: “It’ll be a difficult game, we have not played them yet, but we will play them twice in three weeks.

“I’d summarise that we don’t know much about them, so we have to take it as it comes and if we perform like we did against WSL side Sheffield last Sunday, we should be fine.”
