SCOTT Arfield insists Burnley aren't short of confidence on the road after admitting their point against Sunderland was 'bitter sweet'.

The goalless draw at the Stadium of Light moved the Clarets eight points clear of the bottom three with nine games to go and inched them a step closer to Premier League survival.

But winger Arfield admitted it was a game the squad felt they could have won to end their long wait for a first away win of the campaign, which now includes 15 league games as well as two cup outings.

Burnley were well on top in the first half but they failed to take their chances and make their dominance pay.

"It was clear to see in the first half we were better in every department so it’s bitter sweet," Arfield said.

"We come and get another point on the board but the game was there for the taking for us."

But the 28-year-old said the failure to collect all three points wasn't due to a crisis of confidence.

"I don’t think that’s an issue, it was just the way the game panned out," the Canada winger said.

"We want to look like the team that plays at home when we go away and I think we’re getting the balance right now.

"We look like we’re the same team, we hit people on the break and we believe we can win on the road so I don’t think confidence has ever been an issue for us.

"They were going to have a reaction at half-time and they were going to have to change it up and come at us a little bit more. One goal was going to win the game.

"We had many chances, three or four really good chances and the second half some half chances. If one of those goes in I think we go on and win the game."

Arfield, who will feature for Canada against the country of his birth, Scotland, in a friendly at Easter Road on Wednesday night, admitted it was a game Burnley might look back on at the end of the season and think they could have claimed the win.

But Burnley are continuing to edge close to safety with games running out and they extended their gap over the relegation zone this weekend.

"I think everybody would be happy with that," said Arfield.

"I suppose every club is the same but there’s certain games you look back on and you could have got the three points, but we’re in a healthy position now and we go again after the internationals.

"At the end of the season if we’re still in this division I don’t think anyone can complain. You make it easier if you go on the road and get that win but other people talk about that, we want to win every game but our home form speaks for itself."
