BLACKBURN Rovers boss Owen Coyle is in no doubt his side are in need of new blood with just a week to go before the January transfer window closes.

Rovers are yet to add to their squad this month, and with no additions possible after the 11pm deadline on January 31, Coyle is hopeful that they can get some business done before then.

Director of Football Operations Paul Senior revealed last week that Venky’s would provide funds to strengthen should the right players become available, though the coffers could be boosted by the potential sale of Ben Marshall with talks ongoing between Rovers and Wolves.

Having allowed Jack Byrne and Martin Samuelsen to return to Manchester City and West Ham respectively, Scott Wharton joining Cambridge United on loan and Marvin Emnes still yet to return after his loan spell from Swansea expired, plus their current injury list, the Rovers squad is looking stretched.

And Coyle believes the club need to bring in players who can have an instant impact in their battle against the drop.

He said: “I have identified two or three good players to bring to the club that I think will help us.

“Paul Senior is now working very hard on that to move things on and hopefully Paul can get the green light and the ok from the owners to press the button on one or two things.

“There’s no doubt in terms of numbers we need to add to the squad.

“We have let Jack Byrne and Martin Samuelsen go, and you can see numbers wise that although we have some good young players coming through which is great, in the battle that we’re in, you want the ones that come in to have an instant impact to help the team move forward.

“That’s what we’re trying to target and hopefully we’ll be able to do that.”

Emnes signed for Rovers on the final day of the summer window, but saw his initial loan deal expire on January 15.

He has since returned to parent club for new boss Paul Clement to cast his eye over the Dutchman who played 20 times for Rovers, scoring three goals, in the first half of the season.

However, he wasn’t involved for the Swans in their impressive win at Liverpool at the weekend, and Coyle is hoping that could play in to hands.

Emnes couldn’t play for a third team this season, having already turned out for Swansea and Rovers, while he could be available for Saturday’s FA Cup tie with Blackpool with the Premier League side having been knocked out in round three by Hull City.

“Marvin is one we’re trying very hard to get back,” Coyle said.

“When I mentioned the two or three that I wanted to add, Marvin Emnes wasn’t one of them, because he was already here.

“I totally understand Swansea and Paul Clement wanting to have a look at him.

“But hopefully after they achieved a fantastic result at Liverpool, that could make it more viable that Marvin can come back to Blackburn Rovers and kick on with his career from there.”
