Clarets reporter Tyrone Marshall hands out his player ratings after Burnley's 1-0 win over Southampton.

Man of the match

Matt Lowton 8

Didn’t see a great deal going forward, but defensively outstanding against both Nathan Redmond and Dusan Tadic. One of his best games of the season, composed when he did have the ball and positional play was good.

Tom Heaton 8

Kicking and distribution was impressive, but made a massive double save in the final minute. As important as Barton’s goal.

Michael Keane 7

Made one key interception to get to a through ball before Long in the second half. Read it very well.

Ben Mee 8

One iffy moment against Long in the first half, but a man mountain in the second half. Won everything.

Stephen Ward 7

Made a couple of key interception and blocks in the first half. Solid display.

George Boyd 6

Better defensively than offensively. Incredible workrate, won the ball back on numerous occasions and tracked Bertrand well.

Dean Marney 5

Booked after committing a foul seconds after giving possession away. Limped off. Below his best.

Jeff Hendrick 8

Into his stride as a Burnley player now. Ran the show in midfield and was a driving force going forward.

Lancashire Telegraph:

Steven Defour 6

Can’t have played left in a 4-4-2 very often, but worked hard in the position and used the ball well.

Ashley Barnes 7

Contributed with workrate and battling qualities, but got no change out of the excellent Virgil van Dijk.

Andre Gray 6

Took up some good position and his link-up play is so much better than last season. Never had a sight of goal.

Subs

Joey Barton for Marney (73)
