THE Premier League goal of the month award for December 2006 must go down as one of the best given the quality of strikes that were in the running.

Two of those came from Blackburn Rovers pair Morten Gamst Pedersen and David Bentley.

Pedersen in particular was no stranger to a stunning strike, or award nomination, with his goal against Newcastle United on December 9 2006 being shortlisted. The Norweigan winger hammered a shot in to the roof of the net on his less favoured right foot, but the goal couldn’t save 10-man Rovers as they were beaten 3-1 at Ewood Park.

Bentley was nominated for his terrific run and strike in the 2-1 win at Reading seven days later. The winger carried the ball from inside his own half before thundering a shot in to the roof of the net from the right edge of the box to give Rovers the win six minutes from time.

The eventual winner was Manchester United’s Paul Scholes for his strike in the win over Aston Villa.
