ACCRINGTON Stanley’s EFL Cup run - which continues with a third round tie against West Ham tomorrow - will allow owner Andy Holt to reinvest the profits in further work at the Wham Stadium.

A number of improvements were carried out at the ground over the summer and Holt plans to use the money made from their cup heroics this season to continue with the work as he looks to make matchday a more enjoyable experience for Reds fans.

John Coleman’s side have beaten Bradford in a thrilling penalty shootout and knocked out Premier League Burnley so far, and tomorrow will make history as the first side to face West Ham in a domestic cup competition at the Olympic Stadium.

“It’s a great night for the fans and for the club,” said Holt. “The club will do well financially for it and we need whatever we can get. We will spend whatever we can get, there is so much to do.

“It’s a great night for the players as well and it just shows what can be achieved with a good attitude and the lads playing together and working hard.”

Holt, who became majority shareholder at Stanley a year ago, added: “My target is to get sustainability and break even as a club, which if we do that this year we’ll be doing well.

“Any cash we generate we’re going to spend around the ground, it won’t be a profit as such but it will be more cash to spend on the ground. It just gives me a bit of a breather as well, we didn’t get the Football Foundation money on this application.

“Success breeds success, we can get better players, the stadium is getting better, we’re hoping to find some training facilities, one things leads to another, if you can get the ball going in the right direction, we’ve gone from going backwards and struggling all the time to hopefully moving in the right direction.”

The Hammers have had an indifferent start to the season and they have already been beaten at their new home by Astra Giurgiu in the Europa League and by Watford in the Premier League.

They will be desperate to avoid an upset in their first domestic cup tie at the renamed London Stadium, but Holt is happy to see the Reds making history.

“It’s unbelievable,” he said. “I’m delighted for us because it raises the profile again of Stanley which is what we need to do, we need to keep banging the drum because there’s a lot of good things going on.”

The Stanley owner is aware his side have had the luck of the draw so far, but he believes they have earned the big ties, and isn’t ruling out another upset.

“We were lucky to draw Burnley and we were lucky to draw West Ham, it could have been a nondescript tie away somewhere, so I can’t deny that there’s been an element of luck, but we earned that by beating Burnley. You don’t get lucky if you don’t buy a ticket but we’re improving the squad and the facilities at Accrington so we’re buying a ticket.

“I’m not ruling out a decent game for us either. We’re huge underdogs but you don’t have to get our lads up for these games. That’s the difference, with a team like us our lads will be up for it.

“We beat Burnley and that was a dream result, so it could happen.”
