BURNLEY’S hero Sam Vokes hailed a ‘magic day’ at Turf Moor as he scored the goal that sent the Clarets back to the Premier League.

It was just reward for Vokes, who missed the run-in to Burnley’s promotion two years ago after suffering a cruciate knee ligament injury at the end of March.

He celebrated promotion then on crutches but he was at the centre of the action yesterday, heading David Jones’ free-kick into the back of the net on 60 minutes to send Turf Moor wild.

With Middlesbrough and Brighton both slipping up a win was enough to secure promotion for Sean Dyche’s side a week early, and Vokes’ goal was enough to land a 1-0 win and spark scenes of celebration as fans invaded the pitch.

“It’s great. It was a magic day,” Vokes said. “There were a few nerves floating around the place, we got wind of the result before so it might it a bit more tense but we knew the job we had to do and we went out and did it.

“The fanzone cheered when we were warming up. Before the game the lads were brilliant, we knew it was all about us. QPR made it tough but we got the three points in the end.

“It was tough two years ago. Games and days like today I missed out on. It’s great to be a part of this today, getting the goal was special for me.”

Vokes’ 14th league goal of the season extended Burnley’s remarkable unbeaten run to 22 games and they are the first team since Newcastle six years ago to bounce back to the top flight with automatic promotion.

“It’s tough,” the 26-year-old said of bouncing back at the first attempt. “You see teams come down from the Premier League and they’re expected to go straight back up and they don't’ do that because it’s a tough league.

“A lot of the lads know the league and we’ve come back and managed to complete the job.”

Burnley can clinch the title on Saturday with victory at already relegated Charlton and Vokes insists that remains a major ambition for this squad.

Victory in South London would also see the Clarets match their total of 93 points from two seasons ago.

“The gaffer came in after, he was buzzing but said now we go and win the league, we finished second last time and now we want to go and win it,” said Vokes.

The Wales international also thanked for the Turf Moor support as the Clarets eventually managed to break down a resilient Rangers side.

“It was a tricky afternoon today, we knew what was riding on it and QPR made it difficult,” he said. “They frustrated us but we had the crowd behind us and that helped us in the end.”
