ACCRINGTON Stanley new boy Kaid Mohamed is ‘hungrier than ever’ to make the most of his time left in football after being stopped in his tracks last season.

The 31-year-old was enjoying a fruitful loan spell with Northampton Town, scoring five goals in 27 games, before he broke a metatarsal in January and had to undergo surgery.

That setback resulted in the end of his loan spell and he was released by parent club Port Vale in the summer.

But Mohamed, who began his career in the Welsh Premier League, is now back to fitness, having scored twice for Stanley in a behind closed doors win over Oldham on Tuesday, and he is determined to make the most of the time he has left in the game.

“There’s nothing worse,” Mohamed said of the injury which ended his 2014/15 campaign.

“I was having a good season for Northampton, I was flying. What can you do? Nobody likes to get injured but you have to get fit again and get back into it.

“I’m hungrier than ever now. I want to prove myself and I want to get playing again, get some minutes under me, help the team and score some goals and create chances.

“Footballers don’t last forever. It’s more getting fit again and getting right again.

“It’s made me more hungry, the way I was playing I want to get back to that, so fingers crossed I can start kicking on again.

“I’ve been in League Two a few years now so I know what it’s about and how physical it is. I’m looking forward to playing in it again.”

Mohamed hasn’t played competitively since picking up the injury in a 1-1 draw with Southend on January 3, but he has been training with Stanley recently and is edging closer to a return to first-team action, having signed for the Reds on non-contract terms.

“Two goals on Tuesday were good, it’s always nice to score,” he said.

“It was good to get some minutes under my belt again and to get fit, I’m feeling good and I’m feeling sharp and I can’t wait to get out there.

“Games are the best thing for fitness, the more games you get under your belt. The reserve games and training games help, they’re really good, we had one on Monday and Tuesday.

“Training is not as intense as a game, it’s always good to get minutes under your belt.”

Mohamed has been impressed with the quality of the Stanley squad since arriving at the Wham Stadium, and the coaching staff know what he can offer, having worked with John Coleman’s assistant Jimmy Bell briefly at Port Vale.

“I came up for a trial game and I knew straight away there were some good footballers here,” said Mohamed. “It’s a great squad, it’s a really strong squad. I can’t wait to be involved in it.

It’s good to have competition at every club. I’m really good friends with Jimmy, I’ve worked with Jimmy before and he knows what I’m about.”

“I’ve watched the team a few times and it’s a really strong squad. I can’t wait to be involved in it.”

Mohamed could make his debut for Stan ley in their League Two clash at Barnet this afternoon.
