BLACKBURN Rovers winger Craig Conway has set himself an ambitious double-figure goal target for the season.

No Rovers player has made more assists than Conway – 23 in 62 games – since his £100,000 arrival from Cardiff City in January 2014.

But the 30-year-old is determined to prove he can be a taker, as well as a creator, of chances in 2015-16.

He has scored four times in each of his two seasons at Ewood Park and, at the end of the 2014-15 campaign, was urged by Rovers boss Gary Bowyer to add more goals to his game.

And Conway said: “Assists have not really been a problem but I’ve not scored as many goals as I would have liked.

“I added a few towards the end of the season but I should definitely be getting up and close to 10 goals.

“That’s a lot of goals for a midfielder but that’s what I should be aiming for.

“Ben Marshall got close with seven last season and, given there’s so many games, hopefully I can add more goals for the team.”

Prolific Rovers forwards Jordan Rhodes and Rudy Gestede netted 41 league goals between them last season.

That meant they finished the campaign as the most prolific strike partnership in the Championship along with Watford’s Troy Deeney and Odion Ighalo.

But, despite the exploits of Rhodes and Gestede, Rovers still scored fewer goals than all eight of the teams which finished above them in the final standings.

And Conway said: “You look at the teams which went up and they scored a lot of goals, but they also spread them more throughout the squad.

“We’ve heavily relied on Jordan and Rudy and so we’ve all got to accept the responsibility of scoring more goals.

“It’s not as easy as what it sounds, but we definitely need to add more goals throughout the squad.”

Conway finished third in Rovers’ player of the year poll, behind Gestede and winner Markus Olsson, after an impressive second half to the season.

And the Scotland international said: “From the turn of the year I’ve felt really strong and I’ve kicked on.

“So I want to start the season that way and really get off on the front foot.

“If I can get a good pre-season behind me, then I’ll take it from there, but I’ve been feeling really good now for the last six months, at least, so I just want to continue that.”

Watford remain interested in signing Gestede.

But Rovers owners Venky’s have told the Hornets they will have to pay more up front than the £5m they have offered.

So far there have been no enquiries for Rhodes.

Craig Davies, meanwhile, who was linked with Rovers after his release from Bolton Wanderers, has signed a two-year deal with Wigan Athletic.
