ACCRINGTON Stanley have signed their second goalkeeper in a week after brining in 6ft 9in former York City shot stopper Jason Mooney.

Mooney hails from Belfast and started his career in Northern Ireland with Ards, Bangor and Comber Recreation, where he combined his football with jobs as a gardener, at a car wash and at a farm.

But the 26-year-old got his big break in 2011 when he earned a deal with Wycombe Wanderers in 2011 after impressing on a goalkeeping course in the south of England.

He spent much of the season on loan at non-league side Oxford City but then moved to League One with Tranmere Rovers, making four appearances for the Wirral club’s first team.

Mooney turned down a new deal at Tranmere to move to York for the 2014/15 campaign but made only five appearances for the Minstermen, having a loan spell with Alfreton before being released at the end of the season.

But Stanley hope his imposing frame will make him a big hit at the Store First Stadium.

He will compete for the goalkeeping spot with Ross Etheridge, who was signed earlier this week.

The competition for places pleases Reds boss John Coleman.

“It’s something we haven’t had for a long time, as long as I can remember, two goalkeepers having started pre-season,” Coleman said.

“It didn’t happen for Jason at York for whatever reason but he went on loan to Alfreton where he enjoyed his football and did well.

“It’s a chance for him to show what he can do as a league keeper.

“He is big but that’s not the reason he is here. He is keen and keen to work hard and do well and that’s the kind of players we want here.

“There is no number one and number two keeper.

“It will be whoever is best on any given day and whichever one is chosen, the other will support them.

“It’s down to them to battle it out.”

Mooney said: “Coming here was a no brainer for me.

“It’s the chance to have a clean slate and maybe prove some people wrong.

“Hopefully I can get regular games because that is the reason that I’m in football.

“In my short career so far I think last season is the first one where I didn’t do myself justice.

“That just makes me want to try even harder this year to show what I can do and help Accrington be successful.”
