BURNLEY have been relegated from the Premier League despite Danny Ings’ goal giving them a 1-0 victory at Hull City.

Ings ended the Clarets’ 631-minute goal drought – a club record for league matches - when he swivelled to fire in from eight yards in the 62nd minute.

The goal was enough to give Burnley all three points but wins elsewhere for Sunderland, Leicester City and Aston Villa – combined with a draw for Newcastle United – meant that the Clarets were still relegated with two games to spare.

Burnley named the same side that were beaten 1-0 at West Ham United seven days previously, with Michael Duff available after winning his appeal against suspension.

The Clarets needed to win to have any chance of avoiding relegation being confirmed, but the first half produced few clear cut chances.

Ashley Barnes headed a corner over for Burnley, but Ahmed Elmohamady nodded just off target at the other end and Robbie Brady came within a whisker of putting Hull ahead when his free kick hit the top of the crossbar.

Barnes attempted to break the deadlock with an overhead kick early in the second half but the connection was poor and the ball trickled wide, before Tom Heaton saved Tom Huddlestone’s 25-yard drive for Hull.

Burnley seemed to have a justifiable shout for a penalty when Ings surged past James Chester and then appeared to be felled as he continued his solo run into the box. But referee Martin Atkinson waved away appeals for a spot kick, to Ings’ disbelief.

George Boyd then had a penalty appeal turned down as he seemed to be tripped by Chester, but Burnley were ahead in the 62nd minute.

The Clarets penned Hull inside their own box and Hull failed to clear Ben Mee’s centre, allowing Ings to swivel and fire in from eight yards.

Minutes earlier Hull had taken off defender Paul McShane and introduced forward Nikica Jelavic, and Steve Bruce then brought on another striker in Abel Hernandez.

Heaton had to save as Hernandez tried to score with a backheel from close range, before Burnley had a goal disallowed as Barnes bundled both the ball and goalkeeper Steve Harper into the net.

But the Clarets then had a scare as Brady hit the woodwork with a free kick for the second time in the afternoon as his left-footed effort struck the post.

Burnley defended well late on, though, as they hung on for victory – only their sixth win of the campaign, and their fifth successive win at the KC Stadium.

It left Hull in the drop zone and moved Burnley off the bottom of the table, but it was not enough to prevent relegation.
