CONTRACT talks with Piero Mingoia have been put on hold until the end of the season, at the winger’s request, manager John Coleman has revealed.

The Reds chief has been in discussions with the winger about a new deal.

But after helping the club achieve survival with three games to spare and becoming the club’s leading scorer with eight thanks to back-to-back goals in a 3-1 win at home to Carlisle and 2-2 draw at Cambridge United, Coleman says Mingoia is keen to avoid distractions and instead concentrate on a strong end to the season for himself and the team.

“It was refreshing from Piero because he wants to concentrate and see out the season and finish it well before he discusses anything, and I’ve got to take my hat off to him for that,” said the Stanley boss.

“He wants to win as many games and score as many goals between now and the end of the season as he can, which is good.

“We’ll speak more to Piero when the season ends.

“Everyone else is in the same boat.”

That includes young forward Josh Windass, who up until late February had not scored a senior goal, but has since gone on to hit a total of six.

The 21-year-old has another year left on his contract, but Coleman does not want to let that deal run down.

“Obviously you don’t want them to go into the last year of their contract if they’re one of your most valuable assets,” he said.

“That will be discussed at boardroom level as well as myself and Josh.”

He added: “We have got a load out of contract [this summer].

“We’ve got the nucleus of a good side here, but we’ve got to try to get the ones signed up that we want.

“The targets that we want to bring in have got to be better than what are going out. It will be another hard summer, but I’m not the only one in that position. That’s what makes your job so rewarding when you get it right.”

Meanwhile, Andy Procter has suffered an injury setback.

The midfielder suffered a hairline fracture of his leg last month, and Coleman said: “Andy Procter’s got to see another specialist.

“They’re talking about pinning it. I hope that it doesn’t come to that.”

Matt Crooks is a doubt for tomorrow’s visit of Stevenage with a calf injury.
