TWO games, three positions - for Seamus Conneely life at Accrington Stanley has been nothing if not varied so far.

But the former Sligo Rovers man would not have it any other way after being thrown in at the Football League deep end.

“I didn’t expect it to have come as early or quick as it did if I am honest but it was good to make my Football League debut and get it out of the way,” said Conneely, who arrived at the Store First Stadium earlier this month.

Frustratingly, that debut ended in defeat at Tranmere Rovers. Since then Stanley have lost at AFC Wimbledon and at home to Bury.

Conneely started at left back against the Shakers, and said he felt there was an improvement in the team’s all-round performance.

“I was disappointed with my performance against Tranmere and then the team as a whole with losing 3-0 but we were better against Bury so we need to build on that,” said the 26-year-old, who spent 18 months on Sheffield United’s books from January 2011 but never played a first team game.

“I never had that matchday experience, I wasn’t involved, so I am enjoying it and playing full-time football in England is what I have dreamed about,” he added. “My aim is to play and keep myself in the team.”

Conneely is adapting quickly, and that includes the travelling, of which there is plenty still to come with trips to Plymouth, Southend and Luton next month.

“I am not used to the long journeys,” he explained. “In Ireland the longest journey we had was three hours maximum, that’s the only game we would stay over at but here it’s nearly every other week in a hotel it’s something for me to get used to.”

He has yet to experience a Stanley win as part of the matchday squad, but Conneely is confident of an upturn in results.

“I really think we can build on that second half performance against Bury, get a few goals,” he said ahead of tomorrow’s home game with Northampton Town.

“We are due to win a game and to put three or four past a team. I am sure it will come.

“If we can take a lead in the game it will give us a lift and give us something to hold on to and hopefully that will be against Northampton.”
