BLACKBURN Rovers winger Craig Conway is determined to live up to the high standards he demands of himself.

Conway was exceptional in the second half of last season after making a £100,000 January transfer deadline day move from Cardiff City.

The Scotland international made 12 goals and scored a further four in 18 games as he swiftly established himself as one of Rovers’ most influential players.

But so far this season, despite making three assists, he has not been able to hit the same lofty heights.

Conway was dropped to the bench for the win over Fulham and draw with Watford before he was replaced at half-time in Tuesday’s defeat to Rotherham United.

But the 29-year-old played the full 90 minutes on Saturday as Rovers had to settle for a 0-0 draw with Huddersfield Town at Ewood Park.

And Conway believes his performance in the Roses clash, in which he swung over 14 crosses, was a definite step in the right direction.

He said: “I was happy with my performance.

“I spoke to the manager and last season I set my standards so high – there was almost an an assist every game – but that’s the standard I have set and I don’t think that’s a bad thing.

“Obviously I want to play every game and I was really glad I came back in on Saturday and I think I did myself justice.

“That’s what I want to do and hopefully I can continue to do that.

“And hopefully I can add a few more goals to my game as well as keeping creating chances.”

No-one has been a bigger beneficiary of Conway’s crossing expertise, particularly from dead-ball situations, than Rudy Gestede.

Of the 15 goals Conway has created for Rovers seven of them have been scored by Gestede.

The Benin international missed Saturday’s stalemate with a hamstring injury.

But Conway, who has yet to get off the mark this season, said: “The type of player I am, I’m always going to cross the ball in no matter what – it’s the first thing that comes into my head.

“And I think you saw on Saturday we had a lot of chances.

“I think if you always put crosses into the box you’re always going to get something off them whether Rudy is there or not.”

It was from a Conway free kick that Huddersfield striker Grant Holt handled in the area under pressure from Shane Duffy.

But Jordan Rhodes, who had converted his previous 10 spot-kicks for Rovers, sent the resulting penalty wide.

Conway said of his fellow Scotland international: “It’s very rare of him but he’ll be back on them as he’s a goalscorer.

“He was disappointed but the boys got round him, he’ll keep his head up and I’m sure he’ll score the next one.”
