MARVIN Sordell is eager for the chance to build on his first league start for Burnley – after having to wait two-and-a-half years for his full debut in the top flight.

Sordell moved into the Premier League for the first time in January 2012 but it was not until the Clarets’ home match against Sunderland on Saturday that he was finally given the opportunity to start a match at the top level.

The 23-year-old was only used as a substitute for Bolton Wanderers before their relegation from the Premier League, but Sordell joined Burnley in the summer and started alongside Lukas Jutkiewicz against Sunderland after Danny Ings was ruled out through injury.

A goal eluded him and the rest of the Clarets team in a 0-0 draw, but the striker hopes he can get another opportunity to start when Sean Dyche’s side travel to West Bromwich Albion on Sunday.

“Saturday was my first Premier League start, my first start in the league for the club, and it’s something for me to build on, to keep on improving and learning,” Sordell said. “I do that every day in training and every time I get the opportunity to play.

“There are always chances for everyone here, the gaffer said that from day one.

“As long as you keep working hard and you’re always ready, your chance will come at any moment.

“He put me in on Saturday and hopefully I’ve done enough to get another opportunity.”

Sordell has linked up again with Dyche this season, after previously displaying the best form of his career under the manager at Watford.

“The gaffer has given me a platform to improve and try to get my career back on track,” Sordell said. “I just want to work hard and kick on from here.”
