Barnoldswick boss hits winner to seal first success

First published in Football

BARNOLDSWICK boss Stewart Airdrie took matters into his own hands as his side got their first win of the North West Counties League Premier Division season at the fifth attempt.

Airdrie had called on his side to start converting their chances as they faced another side who were yet to register a point.

And the boss heeded his own words as he struck a last minute winner to complete a 3-2 comeback win.

Two goals in nine second half minutes from Mitchell White and Ben Singleton looked to have given the visitors all three points.

But Liam Hoyle halved the deficit with 18 minutes to play and Matthew Cavanagh levelled things up seven minutes from time before Airdrie won it.

There was also a first win of the season for Padiham in the Evo-Stik League Division One North.

The Storks were beaten in their opener last weekend but bounced back with a fine 2-1 win away at Kendal Town.

All the goals came in 12 second half minutes and it was the home side who struck first through Rob Wilson.

But Steve Wilkes’ side weren’t behind for long and Louis Mayers levelled four minutes later. The same man then hit the winner shortly before the hour to seal the points for Padiham.

It wasn’t such good news for Clitheroe who are yet to get off the mark after falling to a 2-1 home defeat to Bamber Bridge.

Simon Garner’s side were two down at the break and despite Adam Freeland getting a goal back on 59 minutes the visitors held on.

Ramsbottom United’s tough start to life in the Premier Division continued after they lost 1-0 at Workington.

Having let a 2-0 lead slip in their opening day last-gasp 3-2 defeat against Kings Lynn the Rams were undone by another late strike on Tuesday night.

Martyn Coleman’s effort 13 minutes from time gave the home side all three points.

Despite the defeat the Rams can take encouragement from another spirited performance heading into this weekend’s trip to Rushall Olympic.
