CLARETS captain Jason Shackell is hoping for more than a brief encounter with the Premier League second time around.

The defender played 11 times for Norwich in his only other taste of the top flight, in the 2004/05 season when the Canaries ultimately suffered relegation on the final day.

Shackell admits there were times when he wondered whether a second chance would come around.

But now it has, after skippering Burnley to automatic promotion last season, he is determined to savour it.

“You always dream there’ll be another opportunity,” said the 30-year-old.

“Last year was a phenomenal year and we’ve worked hard to get this opportunity. Now we need to make the most of it and give it our all in every game.

“We’re realistic, we know it’s going to be really tough, we’re going to be up against it, and I’m sure there’ll be ups and downs along the way.

“We just need to remain level-headed throughout it and not get to low about anything. If we don’t get too carried away then I’m sure we’ll surprise one or two.”

Ahead of the season opener at home to Chelsea on Monday night, Shackell said: “As soon as you get promoted you know you’re going to be coming up against all these players at some point during the season, so why not bring them here at the start.

“It’s going to be great for the fans, the place will be packed, and it’ll be a fun one to get stuck in to at the start.”

He added: “It’s more excitement than anything; it’s not really nerves.

“You know it’s going to be tough – there’s no point in being unrealistic. But these are the players that you want to play against and test yourself against.

“It’ll be a tough challenge, but we’ll be well prepared.”
