We can’t wait for opener, says Blackburn Rovers boss

BLACKBURN Rovers boss Gary Bowyer cannot wait for the ‘real stuff’ to get started after his side rounded off their preparations for the new Championship season with a 1-1 draw at home to Mark Hughes’ Stoke City at Ewood Park yesterday.

Rovers kick off their league campaign at home to Cardiff City on Friday.

And they will go into the big season opener on the back of an unbeaten pre-season programme which culminated with an evenly fought clash against a Stoke side managed by former Rovers player and manager Mark Hughes.

Jordan Rhodes opened the scoring with an expertly taken header but the Premier League outfit ensured honours ended even with an equally impressive finish from their big summer signing Bojan Krkic.

And Bowyer said: “I’m not a fan of pre-season friendlies but they serve a purpose and we knew today would be a really good test and I thought our lads stood up very well to it as Stoke have got some quality.

“The lads put in a really good shift, worked very, very hard, and managed to score a very good goal.

“But it’s over now and now we can fully focus on Cardiff and get ready for the real stuff.”

You put your £20 on it, why not make it £50?

I am really looking forward to the season with real enthusiasm. Close season is a desolate time for any football supporter so the return of PMT (pre match tension) is most welcome. First time in a few seasons that I feel we have a squad capable of having a real go and win more than our share of matches. Come on you Blues!!!!

Lets not be foolish. We had a good end to last season, mainly because of Gestede. Thats it. Not much else has changed.

GB to be sacked. Plays his favourites and finds the wages to fund King, Willamson, Lowe, Varney etc... and lets players like Nunes and Rochina go who are the least much better substitutes than Varney and most others.

Sack GB.

Paddy Power also make Jordan Rhodes favourite for top scorer at 7/1. Surely if he's banging the goals in for fun then either a) the team will be getting the right results which would mean Bowyer will be doing a great job, or b) regardless of whether Bowyer is sacked or not, Rhodes would be doing enough to prevent us from being relegated, the outcome most Burnley fans seem to relish.

Speaking of odds, Paddy Power also make Gestede 33/1 to be top scorer. I might put a cheeky fiver on that seeing as how he finished last season as the in-form striker.

I see O'Connor has gone to Plymouth on loan until Jan. No mention on Telegraph page which reported recently that he was hoping to break into rovers first team.

I think you've got John O'Connor and Jack O'Connell mixed up, the latter was the subject of the recent article about breaking into the first team.

That's a very ill informed and simplistic statement.

Gestedes contribution was significant but the improvements in the whole team after Christmas were also influenced by the inclusion of Conway on the wing, Michael Keane coming in at right back and Cory Evans returning to fitness.
