BLACKBURN Rovers striker Jordan Rhodes is hoping to repay the club’s faith in him by spearheading a charge to the Premier League this season.

The front man signed a contract extension earlier this month keeping him at Ewood Park until the summer of 2019 amid speculation surrounding his future.

But Rovers never received a bid for the 24-year-old, who scored 25 goals last season, and the former Huddersfield man is now looking forward to the Championship season opener against Cardiff City in three weeks time.

“To get the contract signed and all sorted out is terrific,” said Rhodes. “I love it here. Until Blackburn Rovers don’t want me anyway more I will be a Blackburn Rovers player.

“I am really looking forward to the new season. We’ve been back two and a half weeks and looking forward to that Friday night now.

“The foundation is there, the players are there. It is a Premiership club. It is our duty as players to try and get that status back.

“A lot of fans are quietly optimistic.

“As players we are trying to distance ourselves as much as we can do from that side of it all and concentrate on making ourselves better and not get carried away.

Rhodes will be part of the Rovers squad that travels to League One side Bradford City tomorrow for their latest pre-season friendly and midfielder Craig Conway is also expecting to recover for the trip.

The former Cardiff City man took a kick to the foot in the midweek draw with Accrington Stanley but is likely to recover in time for the trip to Yorkshire.

Rhodes may also miss out on a start with Ewood boss Gary Bowyer set to pair Chris Brown and Rudy Gestede up front but the competition for places is something the Scottish international is relishing heading into his third season at Rovers.

“The manager has got a few strikers to choose from,” added Rhodes citing not only Brown, Gestede and Varney but also the likes of Ben Marshall and Josh King as possible options.

“There is plenty of competition for places and no-one is taking it for granted. Every day in training it is up to us to prove it.

“It’s a really good team spirit at the moment. Everyone is familiar with one another and last week in Portugal helped the cause even more and we are hoping to take that into the new season.”

Top man Jordan. Bit more luck with injuries this season than last and we should be right up there with the best this time around. It's not going to be easy but we need to pull something out of the bag this season before it gets really difficult. Being the jammy beggars that we are, I can see us pulling it off.

Well if Bunleh can get automatic promotion from the Championship then anyone can.

Rovers odds for promotion are far better than Bunleh's were at the start of last season.

It's refreshing to hear a player of Rhodes calibre speaking so highly of the club after commiting his long term future to the club this summer.

Has Danny Ings signed up yet?

Target number one - get in the top 6 and stay there all season, push for the top two if we can.

We have a good strong squad, still a bit weak in defence especially down the right but the key word is squad, we actually have one. We aren't going to win every game, too many decent teams in this league for comfort but we should at the very least make the playoffs.

Three weeks to go and the area is buzzing, lots of fans around wearing shirts, t shirts etc; suddenly its cool to be a Rovers fan again, and even better, be proud of it.

All the messages coming out of Ewood are positive again, I haven't been to an away game for 20 odd years because of work and family commitments but I hope to get a couple for the Blackpool game today or tomorrow if they haven't sold out already, and if I can't get any then there's always the next one.

Target has to be top 2 from he off Nick. Sure there is some quality in the division on paper though the biggest issue in the Championship is mental strength and as long as these lads have it and stick at it we'll do well. Aiming for anything less than top 2 is already eroding that mental strength. That said, if we stumble at any time the fans need to stick at it and be strong too. The players don't need to talk it, they've just got to believe it and do it.

Your as strong as your weakest link and for me we have three

1 Goalkeeper - not convinced that we should not have brought someone else in.

2 Right back. Pity whoever is going to be playing on thee right flank for they will have a lot of tracking back / covering to do. Dont care that we have "lots of options" if in fact all options are mediocre or papering over the cracks. Clubs will have noticed that wehave not strenthened there.

3 Concerned who the central midfield engorcer holding player is going to be

Therefore for me still to vulnerable in at least 3 key positions.

As all good coaches and managers wull be doing building dossiers on all clubs Strengths and Weaknesses.

Ours are still unfortunately glaringly obvious.

What has Team GB done to solve them!!

The plan seems to be 1) Getting Robbo fit, 2) brought in Baptiste, 3) have Cory Evans playing behind Cairney and a couple of attacking wide men.

I think we can see GB is trying to do better this season, any chance you could do the same ?

COYB's.[/p]
The players don't need to talk it, they've just got to believe it and do it.[/p]
Top two. Been sniffing again tit face tall in the saddle

The Seagull has landed says...

The foundation is there, the players are there. It is a Premiership club.

.....well here's the thing Jordan...it's not a premiership club is it. If it were then your fixtures would be telling you you'd be playing Chelsea, Liverpool, Man United etc etc, but it doesn't.
Rotherham, Brentford and Huddersfield are the glamour ties for you.
Nobody has a right to be in the Premier league, you have to earn it.

Il admit as a Claret its a pain to see Rhodes stay, however loyalty is scarce in football these days so you have to respect him for staying.
Theres no doubt Rovers are on a better path than they have been over the past two years, and I think its going to be an intresting season in the Championship this year...
Thanks for a sensible comment and I genuinely hope it's as interesting for you guys next season but don't worry, at least you won't have to play the mighty Rovers ;)

One of the biggest problems concerning aiming too high from the off is you can miss the target completely, when you are up there everyone wants to beat you twice as much, just to prove they are "better".

Top 6 at Christmas, top 4 mid February, top 2 Easter will suit me fine.
