BRETT Ormerod and Australian defender Charlie Beverley both featured for 45 minutes as Accrington Stanley got their pre-season off to a successful start with a 5-2 win at New Mills.

The Reds cruised past Evo-Stik First Division North opposition thanks to goals from Marcus Carver, George Bowerman, Will Hatfield and a brace from Kal Naismith.

Naismith opened the scoring from the penalty spot after Shay McCartan had been fouled.

Carver headed home to restore Stanley’s lead after New Mills equalised, before Naismith’s second goal made it 3-1 at the interval.

Stanley played a different outfield team in each half and Adam Buxton, who spent the end of last season on loan at the club from Wigan Athletic, featured in the first period.

The 22-year-old is now a free agent and recently had a trial spell at Hibernian.

Goalkeeper Cameron Belford, who linked up with Stanley from the first day of pre-season with a view to a deal, played for the full 90 minutes.

Stanley introduced Ormerod for the second half, with the 37-year-old training with his former club.

A number of other players without a club also featured as Reds boss James Beattie assesses potential signings for the new season.

Among them were 19-year-old left back Beverley, who has travelled to England in search of a club after previously playing for Queensland side FNQ FC Heat, as well as former Stoke City centre back Ben Heneghan, 20.

Callum Morris and former Norwich, Boston United and Histon midfielder Michael Clunan, 20, also played.

New Mills halved the deficit just after half time but Bowerman made it 4-2 before Hatfield added a fifth from the spot after being brought down himself.

Stanley (first half): Belford; Buxton, Atkinson, Winnard, Liddle; Naismith, Joyce, Windass, Mingoia; McCartan, Carver.

Stanley (second half): Belford; Hunt, Heneghan, Aldred, Beverley; Morris, Clunan, Hatfield; Ormerod, Gray, Bowerman.

* Laurence Wilson, who was released by Stanley at the end of last season, has rejoined former club Morecambe on a one-year deal.
