Craig Short: Rudy Gestede can take division by storm

Lancashire Telegraph: Rudy Gestede celebrates scoring for Rovers Rudy Gestede celebrates scoring for Rovers

CRAIG Short cannot wait to unleash Blackburn Rovers striker Rudy Gestede on Championship defences again.

The 25-year-old finished last season in blistering form with nine goals in his final eight starts after making the permanent move from Cardiff City in January.

But Short reckons Gestede will be even stronger once he has reaped the benefits of a full pre-season working with the Rovers coaching team.

“We were very lucky to get him,” said Rovers first-team coach Short, a former defender for the club.

“As a centre half you know however poorly a big centre forward plays he will always bring a big physical presence.

“You also know that if you have a big centre forward in your team you always have the option of hitting his chest or playing the ball up to him to flick it on, as we saw at Huddersfield when Jordan Rhodes scored the first of his hat-trick.

“Sometimes Rudy can be his own worst critic and he accepts criticism when you give it to them – I’ve been really impressed with that side of him.

“He’s still young, he’s just had the most games he’s ever played in a season, and he’ll now have the benefit of a good pre-season with us as well.

“Once he gets that under his belt we’ll be looking to unleash him.

“He’ll be confident – and nothing beats a centre forward with confidence.”

Short lined-up alongside, and against, some top strikers during his playing career.

And he and fellow first-team coach Tony Grant believes Gestede is an even better header of a ball than their old Everton team-mate Duncan Ferguson.

The 6ft 4in targetman’s prowess in the air has also been a big help to talismanic top scorer Jordan Rhodes, according to Short.

He said: “Jordan’s game is not holding up the ball, it’s about getting behind defences and getting on the end of things.

“Jordan was having to back in and hold it up so Rudy’s arrival took a lot of pressure off him. Rudy is quick, athletic and he’s only going to get better.”

Gestede will face competition for a starting spot this season after the arrival of Chris Brown from Doncaster.

Ironically it was Brown’s performance in Doncaster’s 2-0 home win over Rovers in August that led Gary Bowyer and his staff to putting a big forward at the top of a shopping list that was headed by Gestede.

Both Brown and Gestede will be looking to benefit from the crossing ability of Craig Conway this season.

The winger created 12 goals and scored a further four in the second half of 2013-14 after following in the footsteps of Gestede from Cardiff.

And Short said: “Craig Conway’s delivery into the box was so consistent and so accurate.

“What we’ll be saying to Craig, Ben Marshall and Josh King is to throw the ball in the box because we’ve got forwards who will get on the end of things.”

Tony Grant now the first team defensive coach along with Craig Short? When did that happen? Must have gone under the radar and probably explains Colin Hendry`s exit from Ewood last week.

Tony Grant had a great upbringing at Everton - but he also played over a hundred plus games for the Clarets near the end of his career. Shame about that blemish on his record!

gotta admit and say I actually agree with the Burnley posters on here, in that Jordan Rhodes will be sold before the season starts. The signings of Varney and Brown do appear strange ones to me. (Preston fans who I work with assure me that Brown is terrible) granted he may have improved at Doncaster, but not the kind of signing I was expecting. And Varney, for me has shown absolutely nothing to warrant a contract. Maybe I have missed something??? But I have an awful feeling that once a few more thousand season tickets are sold, we will be banking an £8-9.5 million pound cheque!

Hope I'm wrong!!!

I think you will be. Gb is no fool and wouldn't trade Rrhodes for someone as "terrible" as the PNE fans seem to think. I think Brown is here to re-enforce thestriking department to ensure Rhodes never has to play alone up front again. How many times did we see that and we were totally ineffective as a team last season? Besides Venkys have repeated for the umpteenth time that we don't need to sell Rhodes.

Sorry to inform you but you're wrong again there old man... your wage bill for 2013/14 can be estimated as follows...

Higher earners:

Rhodes 40k (2.08M)
Best 35k (1.82M)
Etuhu 35k (1.82M)
Robinson 35k (1.82M)
Campbell 30k (1.56M)
Dunn 30k (1.56M)
Varney 15k (780k)
Hanley 15k (780k)
Gestede 15k (780k)

Total £13.0M

Estimate a conservative average of 12k per week across the board for the remaining first team regulars and subs... Cairney, Marshall, Williamson, Kilgallon, Spurr, Lowe, Evans, Taylor, Olsson, Conway, King, Kean. Total: £7.49M

Then say £3k p/w for the following backup players: Eastwood, A Henley, Kane, R Henley, Rittenberg, Cotton, Dabo. Total: £1.09M

Currently a squad of 33 according to Sky Sports website. So add a few quid for the remaining 5 squad members, call it £1k per week. Total: £260k

Plus the wages paid last season to players who left mid season or after, which will also impact on the FFP calculations:

Dann £1.04M (6 months salary)
Goodwillie £624k (6 months + pay off)
+ 7 other bit part players, say £750k
Total: £2.41M

Total wage bill for 2013/14: £24.25million

Not exactly halved is it? You made a loss in the last accounting period of £36.5million, your wage bill at this time was reported to be "in excess of £30million". In the current accounting period you have cut the wage bill by reducing the number of primarily backup players who were on lower salaries (Dann and Goodwillie the exceptions), but you have also incurred an additional drop of £8million in parachute payments which must be accounted for.

Your final position is therefore not far off what it was previously, and may perhaps be even worse.

You really do need to wake up and realise that the free ride is over, and that a massive cut to your wage bill is necessary. Rhodes will be sold, but more worryingly for you so will 5 or 6 other first team players. It's not wishful thinking from a Burnley perspective, its simple economics, and the sooner you accept it the easier it will be for you.

Oh come on funny man you can do better than that, even Peter Kay only used the " Garlic Bread " joke for one tour.

Just wow, bunny boiling taken to yet another extreme - what a very sad lad.

Rhodes may be sold, he may not be sold. It's what happens in football. Just because you fools seem to think Dyche will never leave (as you did with Coyle) we tend to be abit more realistic. Jordan Rhodes certainly isn't bigger than Blackburn Rovers and if he goes he goes - unlike Shaun Dyche, who clearly IS bigger than Bonleh because without him you'd be languishing towards the bottom end of the Championship. Your club is completely reliant on ONE man and you hilariously think he'll be there for life because he's not like every other human being, he's not interested in money or bettering himself, he just wants to spend his life as Bonleh manager!! You really couldn't make that up!

Still, at least you're about to sign some winger from League 1 P.N.E!!!

Bonleh FC about to make Swindon Towns & Barnsleys Premier League stint look good.....

You better hope Ings stays at Burnley.

I mean Burnley would then be in the market for a striker, and I am certain Rhodes would jump at the chance to play in the Premier League for the biggest club in Lancashire, and the opportunity to reclaim his international place back.

Be careful what you wish for you lower league scamps.

Thanks for that - been very helpful there with your in-depth knowledge of our playing staff contracts. So that makes:

2013-14:
Championship TV £3m
Gates (avg 13000 @ £15) £4.5m
Sponsorships say £3m
Parachute payment 2 £16m
Venkys (potential) £5m
Total income = £31.5m

Season outgoings
Wages £24.25m (as verfied by our 6-fingered accuntant)
Running costs £3.5m

Net £3.75m PROFIT!!!!

2014-15:
Championship TV £3m
Gates (avg 13000 @ £15) £4.5m
Sponsorships say £3m
Parachute payment 3 £8m
Venkys (potential) £5m
Total income = £23.5m

Season outgoings
Wages £17.5m (with Best, Etuhu and Campbell gone, Dunn and Robbo's wages reduced, as verfied by our 6-fingered accuntant)
Running costs £3.5m

Net £2.5m PROFIT!!!!

Thanks a lot for that you sister loving inbred - from your figures I deduce that as long as Venky's continue to put in £1.5-2m per season it's business as usual for the next couple of seasons at least by which time you'll e back in the gutter to which you belong.

It's not wishful thinking from a Burnley perspective, its simple economics, and the sooner you accept it the easier it will be for you.
why do you put yourself through this - day and night, night and day?

i have told you twice now that MIND can offer you excellent counselling. please give them a call before it is too late for you
It's already too late HH.... the troll is scarred for life. There's no treatment for this disease. Blackburn Rovers FC has unwittingly created this clown through years and years of mental torture.

It's no wonder your Riverside stand is slowly subsiding.. you clowns dont pay maintenance costs! The no-dad also claims that Venky's have injected a further £5million of their own cash! LOL! Just LOL!

It cannot be so... the no-dad says its all profit, no loss at all! LOL

Sorry but looking at the standard of players you are chasing at the moment yo u simply can''t afford Rhodes. If your tight fisted directors did manage to cobble together £10 mill at least, you simply couldn't afford his wages.

Idiot troll hasn't realised that the wage bill has been at least halved last season.

YAWN...and if you're not Supper -Carrots in disguise, I'll plait straw!

From Venky's London Limited, Directors' Report and Financial Statements for the Year ended 31 March 2013..

The Board ensures compliance with all relevant rules and regulations, particularly those laid down by the FA, Premier League, Football League, UEFA and FIFA, and monitors and considers the impact of any potential changes.

Compliance with Championship Financial Fair Play regulations will challenge the football club as they try to manage finances such that they operate within their income levels. The focus for Blackburn Rovers has to be on striving for promotion back to the Premier League and working to increase revenue streams back up to a level that will allow them to achieve this by the completion of the 2013/14 season.

The board endeavours to keep up to date with any new developments occurring in the market segments in which the company operates.

In short, you've missed the boat, it's now every man for himself.. expect Venky's to be preparing their exit strategy, they now know that there is no profit to be made from this venture and only bad publicity to be gained from funding its extortionate costs. Oh dear.

Absolutely correct.
GB seems a quick learner owd nick. After persevering with Rhodes on his own up front he quickly saw the difference a partner made after Gestede was introduced. Arguably we played our best fooball of the season with the two strikers and it looks like it will be that way from the off this coming season. We also have backup in Brown and Varney if needed.

You need to understand your current predicament here. Even though granted your inane ramblings will more than justify your moving onto disability payments - you're clearly a dollar short - but sadly for you due to the austerity measures forced on us from the incumbent government, you're also a day late because DLA is being phased out and Personal Independent Payments (PIP) only pays enough for your weekly block of Mayfairs.

Probably better you get an actual job and do something interesting with your life - heck you may find there's enough left over to pay for an actual season ticket at the Turd.. Though again, you're a day late seeing this year your team are going to pay us back handsomely in kind for the laughs as we watch team after team break their scoring records (and their legs) on that league two pitch you laughably call the Turf.

But don't be too disheartened. The pendulum is swinging back again and you will be back down faster than a Dingles pants in an online chat room.

You can't afford him. The end.
Hahahaha! I just had a mental image of the dyke going to Venkys with a 750k bid and their faces..

Hahahaha! I think a nation of 1bn would immediately become Bonleh fans just to thank them for the laughs!

Yes we can. The beginning.
The transfer fee would have to be around £10mill and he'd want £30K a week minimum....

Like I said....... you can't afford him.

The problem being a club like Bonleh is that the only way to attract decent players is by offering them a big pay day because what else would possible attract anyone to your League 1 standard ground, support and facilities? These modern day Premier League footballers want more than the minimum wage and a refurbished iphone - they want BIG DOLLARS and Bonleh simply can't compete. Awful ground, 12,000 home fans (if that increases they're plastics so doesn't count) relegation favorites by a country mile and to top it off a £10K per week wage cap. At least you've altered the players tunnel to the corner of that eye sore asbestos riddled stand rather than the middle eh!!!! LOL Ambition or what?!!

Just make the most of having a decent manager and pray he doesn't do what every other decent thing to be associated with your club does and sh*t on you from a great height....

Tara luv, no hard feelings eh...... snigger

Gestede and Conway are really good, They show how easy to score goals with there conversion ratio.

JR is really magical player and he got a good eye on the post always, and his finishes are just amazing.............
...is truly great too.

just waiting to start the season. Sure,we will kick start with a WIN over Cardiff and balance the shape of the team.

Well , I am certainly looking forward to next season .

Unfortunately we have to put up with tripe sports like
cricket and tennis for the moment . About as skilful as tiddlywinks .

Looking forward to Burnley being slaughtered by , well just about everyone . Wonder if they will manage to reach double figures in points ?

Meanwhile , I will enjoy The Mighty Rovers beating everyone in sight .

We have a superb manager , a magnificent team , and a strong supporter base .

Compare that to Burnley - a load of players who would be laughed out of a Sunday School league , and supporters who would make J*mmy S*v"ll" look like a nice guy .

Bring it on .

"Posters" - I thought there was only one burnley fan on here at the minute, oh sorry my mistake there is two.
I hope for one minute you are not implying I am a Burnley fan? I have had a Rovers season ticket every season since 1985. I attended all home games, probably 1 in 2 away ones and have travelled to european games including Lyon, Leverkusen and Feyenoord. Wembley 87, playoffs charity Shield, Carling Cup etc etc... a dingle I am most certainly not. And my realistic comments about an ex - Doncaster forward, and Varney should not make me be portrayed as one. I have yet to speak to a single Rovers fan who can say Varney offers any form of positive contribution. My comments re:Rhodes were fears based on the Shearer saga when we were assured he was going nowhere then weeks before the season starts......, But like I said Obviously I pray I'm wrong
