Sir, – I am very proud to live in a city with an important World Heritage Site which comprises the cathedral, the castle and the riverbanks. As a volunteer in the visitor centre I welcome visitors, answer questions and share information.

On several occasions, visitors have come into the visitor centre to complain about the disgusting state of the public toilets on Palace Green. This is very embarrassing and upsetting as the university, the castle and the cathedral are not responsible for these facilities.

It is the responsibility of the county council.

When will the county council realise that public toilets need to be clean and hygienic all day. It is disgraceful that visitors to our beautiful city who come from all over the world are subjected to having to use such disgusting facilities.

Will the county council agree to meet their responsibility for public health by agreeing to maintain public toilets in a clean and decent state?
