Duff close to Clarets decision

MICHAEL Duff is nearing a decision on the offer of a new contract at Burnley.

Duff’s current deal expires at the end of this month but the popular defender has been offered a new one-year contract to remain at Turf Moor.

The 36-year-old is expected to face increased competition for a place in the Clarets starting line-up following the club’s promotion to the Premier League, with Sean Dyche aiming to add a centre back to his squad before the start of the new season.

Burnley are interested in West Brom’s Craig Dawson and have also been linked with Richard Keogh, the 27-year-old Derby County defender whose mistake handed QPR victory in the play-off final but who otherwise had an impressive season with the East Midlands club.

Duff is understood to have attracted interest from a couple of Championship sides but has always been happy at Burnley, the club he has represented for a decade since moving from Cheltenham Town in 2004.

The veteran has been in discussions with the Clarets over a deal and developments are expected soon.

“We’ve spoken to the club and we’re in talks,” Duff’s agent Gary Mellor confirmed.

Duff started 42 games during the 2013/14 campaign and was a pivotal part of the side that gained promotion to the top flight.

The Clarets had the meanest defence in the Championship, conceding only 37 goals in 46 league games, as Duff formed an effective partnership with captain Jason Shackell.

Dyche said last season that there was no limit on how long Duff could play on for, and the player himself said following promotion that he was remaining open minded.

Asked how long he would continue to play, he said: “I’ve no idea. I feel fit, we get the physical stats after every game and I’ve been no lower than any other centre half in the league.”

Related links

Burnley released Keith Treacy, Brian Stock, Nick Liversedge and David Edgar last month, and the latter has already joined Birmingham City.

But, like Duff, the Clarets want fellow out-of-contract players Junior Stanislas, Luke O’Neill and Chris Baird to stay.

Baird has been away with Northern Ireland on international duty during their recent tour of South America for friendlies against Uruguay and Chile.

The 32-year-old must decide whether he is willing to move north on a permanent basis after a brief period at Turf Moor at the end of the season following spells with Southampton, Fulham and Reading.

Its a tough one for Duff as signing on for a year is all well and good but in his heart he knows he will not play much. Another year older Duff, as great a servant as he has been, will not cut it in the premier league. Reality is he is at the end of his career - does he want to be a bit part player or step down to carry on playing most games. Says a lot for him not automatically signing as that is the easy option - When he retires there is no coming back so he will be weighing up whether is best to sign the contract and in effect almost retire or have another season or 2 in the championship or league one. Don't get me wrong a fantastic servant to the club, but we cannot afford next year to carry anyone.

All these Blackburn goons running out of things to criticise Burnley about and the latest one is 'Has Ings signed yet?' you can picture them slavering at their Amiga laughing inanely to themselves, surprising enough they haven't thought it through and need to be careful what they wish for.

Well I would be concerned that if we do sell Ings Burnley will definitely be in the market for a new striker, probably from the Championship - now who do you know that is NW based, averages over 20 goals a season and is absolutely desperate to move away from his current club and play in the Premier League in order to win back his international place?

Three things of merit in that post, BFC,the relentless ones. QPR, media darlings but couldn't keep up and Derby, brilliant side couldn't catch us.

So this defender of the best club not promoted is linked with the club that was and this in the half closed eyes of a Rover's fan is evidence of our decline? A lack of ambition, oh well we phoned Mesi but he's out with his mates this week. What sort of parents turn out children, who turn into adult - like this numpty? This just has to be TurfmoorTom trying on anothe ID or size in his bipolar Burnley fantasy. Or is this actualy what passes for intelligent coherent thinking in Blackburn?

You mean "story's" as an abbreviation of "story is". What you've written implies the plural as in more than a single story so does not make grammatical sense. Can you not write? Oh sorry, I forgot - you're from Burnley.

So let's get this right. Very small town gets small crowd. Wow. Really? And why does that mean something to you? Just a couple of points. Firstly we've sold 14,000 season tickets so far. With a full following from the Tyne that's a 17,000 crowd. Secondly, we benefit from being genuine supporters not glory hunters with a mega-phenomenal self-regard for themselves like you lot. Now you are cashless and in the Championship and you can't cope.

Blackburn Rovers - always running out if someone else's money.

At this point the psychosis kicks in and a rattling idiot emerges. Gollum is actually is your perfect moniker - you sound like a very deranged fool. But come back soon as I think without this opportunity to live out your multiple lives you will no doubt be ruining others. And be positive. Lancashire's mental health services need you. In Blackburn Rovers you have found online solace for your sick mind. Perfect match and they love you, honest they do. You don't make a fool of yourself, you do it collectively for your burning boys.

If we picked through the last 20,000 words of your multiple usernames then if 100 made sense, let alone 'football sense' I think the Booker prize went to the wrong person. You my friend are sick - stalking. We're a family club, people like you justifiably make us nervous. We see in your obsession a threat to the vulnerable, your nasty bullying style (and switching IDs) is paedophilic, not that you are, but all the signals are there for those 'in the know'. So don't you expect an easy ride here. Are you sad, deluded, bipolar, psychoticv or just a perv? We can't tell, but football is not your specialist area is it? Anyone with kids would have you down as a definite screwball.

"multiple usernames" - another deluded conspiracy theorist

"100 made sense, let alone 'football sense'" - AP4B and my good self only refer o football matter - you lot resort to wild, unfounded personal mud slinging

"We're a family club" - Wholly agree with that, and you all have 6 fingers.

"people like you justifiably make us nervous" - obviously doing a good job then and we're talking sense

"your nasty bullying style (and switching IDs) is paedophilic" - base on what specialist knowledge is this unfounded, non-football-related wild accusation based?

"football is not your specialist area is it?" - Lets face it, it isn't Burnley's either.

Roll on next season, future turmoil beckons.
