Cairney: Blackburn Rovers will be a force next season

Tom Cairney with his player of the year trophy

Tom Cairney with his player of the year trophy

First published in Football

PLAYER of the year Tom Cairney believes Blackburn Rovers will be ‘a force to be reckoned with’ next season.

Rovers narrowly missed out on the Championship play-offs during the 2013/14 campaign, finishing eighth in the table.

But Cairney says that Gary Bowyer’s youthful squad will have more experience next term and will be stronger challengers for promotion.

Rovers finished the season with 70 points – two more than Leicester required to make the play-offs a season earlier.

Cariney thinks they showed real signs of progress as they finished the season unbeaten in 12 league matches – scoring 31 goals in those games.

“I feel like we’re building an exciting team,” the midfielder said.

“We’re young, we’re attacking and scoring goals, and I think we’ll carry on that next season.

“To go 12 matches in this league is so hard to do because anyone can beat anyone.

“We’re going to be another year older next season and I think we’re going to be a force to be reckoned with after just missing out this season.”

Cairney joined Rovers from Hull City at the start of the 2013/14 campaign, initially on loan before making the move permanent during the January transfer window.

The 23-year-old netted six goals from midfield, having been utilised in a central role and also out wide at various times during the campaign.

His form earned him the player of the season honour.

“It was a massive achievement for me, a great accolade and I’d like to thank the fans for voting for me – I really appreciate it,” Cairney said.

“I’ve played out of position a lot at times this season so it’s been a learning curve for me.

“To get the award playing out of position and doing a job for the team makes it even better. I definitely feel there is more to come from me.

“I’m enjoying it massively here.”

Meanwhile, Norwich City boss Neil Adams has insisted that the Canaries have not made a bid for Rovers striker Jordan Rhodes.

Norwich were linked with a move for Rhodes earlier this week, after Joe Royle joined the club as a consultant. Former Everton and Manchester City boss Royle managed Rhodes at Ipswich.

“I’ve seen all the rumours,” Adams said. “I think they’ve put two and two together and come up with 25.

“Obviously Joe Royle had him as a young player, and I played with his dad Andy Rhodes. That’s where the links are.

“We’ve made no offer for Jordan Rhodes – fantastic player, don’t get me wrong. Scores goals for fun, guarantees goals. But there’s been no offer.”

Norwich signed forward Lewis Grabban from Bournemouth on Thursday.

Exactly when will we be in League 1 and when is the club going into administration? As much as I like to laugh at all the dingles comments, the truth is we need to make some major savings before the next season, and I hope I'm wrong but from a good source at Brockhall is that Rhodes WILL be sold for hopefully in excess of £9 million as we need the money and because he's 1 of the highest paid players in the championship, never mind Rovers.

His agent has 'allegedly' been trying to sort this long before the season ended, on Rhodes's instructions.

No I'm not a dingle, I'm a true Rovers fan but I'm also living in the real world and just hope we manage to keep him for at least this season, but I'm not too hopeful I'm afraid.

Not as scary as last season but it isn't going to happen unfortunately even if this is true. Rhodes at 7-8 million worth a punt. Rhodes at 9-12 hardly likely. He's done well for us but it's no secret Shebbmeista paid way too much for him even back then.

Rhodes needs a team built around him as we have learnt and unless any team in the Premiership see him as the missing link to their style of play, no-one is going to fork out that kind of dosh for him unless we get to the Premiership and he proves himself there first.

Just look at what Norwich paid for Grabbon and what Burnley allegedly are punting for McCormack. 5-6m tops for Rhodes that's his street value I would say. Any Championship team who could have afforded to pay out 9m+ for him certainly would not contemplate it with FFP on the horizon.

Mr John says...

It is a simple fact that most championship clubs don't break even despite being one of the best attended leagues in Europe with one of the highest admission charges.

Unless, all UK clubs are forced to limit professional squad wages e.g. to an average of wages being paid in comparable leagues of other leading countries such as Germany and Spain, there will be a continuing need for clubs to sell in order to balance the books or create monies for reinvestment. In my opinion, the Financial Fair Play system doesn't tackle the over-inflation of wages in the British game caused by Sky/BT money.

Jordan has been magnificent, and hopefully we will see him again in a Rovers shirt next season. However, realistically at some point in the near future, due to modern day wage excesses, we will have to cash in on Jordan while he still on the up. When that time comes, I will wish him all the best for his Ewood contribution.

We've got as good a starting XI as any team in the league so I don't see any real reason why we can't push for promotion next season. The lads just need to tighten up at the back and we'll be sorted.

Robinson, Lowe, Hanley, Kilgallon, Spurr, Marshall, Cairney, Evans, Conway, Rhodes, Gestede...

These players can propel us back into the Premier League. In Gary Bowyer we have a very capable manager who's achievements last season have gone largely unnoticed. Seven of our (probable) starting line-up were his signings, not a bad turnaround considering where we were heading the season before.

Exactly right, you only need take a look at the figures to realise there is no other option, the head-in-the-sand brigade on here are simply denying the facts. Blackburn Rovers have to make savings of approximately £25million, of course Rhodes (£45,000 a week for the next 3 seasons with a further £4million owed on the original transfer fee) will be sold. And why would he want to hang around for yet another miserable season asking himself "why am I wasting my career". He only needs take a look at the Burnley players and his mind will be made up. Blackburn Rovers is a no-mark club going nowhere but down.

That's why you never once managed to climb above EIGHTH place in the Championship throughout the entire 46 game season. Honestly, some of you morons must be living in an alternative universe.

You managed 8th place WITHOUT a transfer ban, how can you possible envisage a stronger season when you are now forced to reduce your wage bill by selling your key players? I think the reality of this situation is going to hurt some of your than others. It's going to get messy, if I were you I'd take my head out of the clouds and accept your fate.

I'm picking up rumours that we are making a move for Will Buckley (Brighton) for a fee circa £3 million (Twitter). Not sure of the real source but he has been seen in a Blackburn hotel with his agent.

Bowyer wasn't able to field all eleven of those players in a single fixture last season as some only arrived halfway through it and some were out injured for long periods. Our probable starting XI had to be built over the course of the season. Come January we'll have a better idea of where we're heading, and if promotion looks a real possibility then we probably won't need to sell any of our key players.

I'm perfectly aware of the reality of the situation, and whilst it's not great it certainly isn't as catastrophic as you'd have us all believe you pathetic little boy. If you were me you'd take your head out of the clouds? Don't worry about me, Crazy Ralph, you should probably just concentrate on getting your own head out of your ar$e. Now go troll someone else.
