Mumby earns Vintage win

THE Vintage Clarets ‘did an Arsenal’ in their latest charity game.

Less than 24 hours after the Gunners recovered from 2-0 down against Hull City at Wembley to win 3-2 and lift the FA Cup, Burnley’s former professionals copied the comeback against amateur opposition.

At a sunny Arbories Ground, home of Padiham Football Club, a fans’ team made up of contributors to the ‘Clarets Mad’ website shocked former favourites like George Oghani and Roger Eli by taking a 2-0 lead.

But the ex-Clarets, still smarting from defeat in their first game of the summer at Haslingden St Mary’s last month, bounced back. Andy Farrell and Graham Lancashire scored to go into the half-time break level at 2-2.

A moment of controversy won it for the Vintage Clarets as Eli went down under a challenge in the box.

A crowd of more than 300 had not seen much in the way of contact but the referee awarded a penalty that Peter Mumby converted on the hour to win the game.

The event raised more than £1,500 for MacMillan Cancer Support in honour of Burnley fan Tony Nuttall, who died last year after battling lung cancer.
