Summary

  • WELCOME to Ewood Park for Blackburn Rovers' must-win final match of the Championship campaign at home to play-off bound Wigan Athletic. Keep up to date with the score with our matchday live blog.

2:13pm

FULL-TIME Rovers 4 Wigan 3. Brighton are in the play-offs, Rovers finish two points behind in eighth on 70.

2:05pm

Rudy Gestede, on a hat-trick, blazes over cross from sub Liam Feeney.

2:04pm

Craig Conway, man of the match.

2:02pm

Four minutes injury-time.

2:01pm

Great finish, from 20 yards, but Nicky Maynard had too much time to execute it.

2:00pm

GOAL 3-4 Wigan. Nicky Maynard. 87 mins.

1:57pm

Craig Conway, who now has a hat-trick of assists, swings over a free kick and Jordan Rhodes nods in from six yards. That's the Rovers' top-scorer's 25th goal of the season.

1:56pm

GOAL 4-2 Rovers. Jordan Rhodes. 83 mins.

1:55pm

Tom Cairney cross controlled by Jordan Rhodes, who then brings a sharp save out of Scott Carson.

1:53pm

Craig Conway free kicks hits Michael Keane and Matt Kilgallon, from inside the six-yard box, can't turn it in, with the keeper saving at the second attempt.

1:48pm

Tom Cairney, with a swerving, dipping 25-yard drive, forces Scott Carson to palm the ball around the post.

1:45pm

Josh King exchanges passes with Tom Cairney and sends over a cross which Jordan Rhodes heads over. Difficult chance.

1:41pm

Rob Kiernan blazes over for Wigan, who are playing much better in the second half.

1:37pm

Rudy Gestede thunders a header against the bar from a Craig Conway corner. From the follow-up, Jordan Rhodes overhead-kicks over.

1:36pm

Attendance 16, 996.

1:34pm

James McClean, who shouldn't be on the pitch, blasts home from close range. Reading have equalised, also.

1:32pm

GOAL 2-3 Wigan. James McClean. 59 mins.

1:30pm

Brighton have equalised. That puts them up to sixth on goal difference above Reading and Rovers.

1:23pm

Second half is under way.

1:05pm

Craig Conway loses his composure after Tom Cairney sent him scampering away down the left.

12:55pm

Grant Hanley clears off the line from Nicky Maynard after James McClean fires just wide. Some, some game.

12:53pm

Surely not? Just the four goals needed now as Rudy Gestede magnificently heads in a Craig Conway cross.

12:50pm

GOAL 3-1 Rovers. Rudy Gestede. 35 mins.

12:48pm

Good save from Scott Carson, tipping over Jordan Rhodes header from Craig Conway cross.

12:46pm

Brighton and Reading are both losing. So, as things stand, Rovers just need another five goals. Easy.

12:43pm

Rovers have a goal, headed in by Jordan Rhodes from a Craig Conway free kick, disallowed. No idea why.

12:38pm

Craig Conway then cuts inside on to his right foot and hammers just over, on the angle, from 25 yards.

12:38pm

Drew breath yet? Wigan equalised from a corner, which Nicky Maynard turned in, but two minutes later Rovers went back in front as red-hot Rudy Gestede collected a cut-back from Craig Conway and place a left-footed shot in at the near post.

12:33pm

GOAL 2-1 Rovers. Rudy Gestede. 19 mins.

12:32pm

GOAL 1-1 Wigan. Nicky Maynard. 17 mins.

12:30pm

What a goal Tom Cairney, who won the ball midway into the Wigan half and, after cutting inside, side-stepped two would-be challengers before sending a cool right-footed finish in off the post.

12:27pm

GOAL 1-0 Rovers. Tom Cairney. 13 mins.

12:26pm

Should be 1-0 Rovers, Jordan Rhodes seeing six-yard shot saved from point-blank range after perfect pull-back from Josh King. Should have hit it first time.

12:21pm

First shot of the match, from James McClean, saved by Paul Robinson.

12:15pm

We are under way.

12:15pm

Tom Cairney is named Rovers' player of the year.

12:01pm

Jason Lowe's match-winner against Middlesbrough at Ewood Park in November has been voted as Rovers' goal of the season.

11:55am

Rovers: Robinson, Keane, Hanley, Kilgallon, Olsson, King, Evans, Cairney, Conway, Gestede, Rhodes. Subs: Eastwood, Lowe, Dunn, Varney, Williamson, Taylor, Feeney.

Wigan: Carson, Kiernan, Ramis, Caldwell, Crainey, Collison, Espinoza, McEachran, McClean, Maynard, Waghorn. Subs: Al Habsi, Holgersson, Maloney, McManaman, Beausejour, Barnett, Fortune.

11:54am

Rovers have named an unchanged team for their must-win final match of the season at home to Wigan.

But Rovers can welcome back the David Dunn and Jason Lowe on to a substitutes’ bench which does not include Ben Marshall.

The fit-again Marshall, out for more than three months with ankle ligament damage, had hoped to be named in Rovers’ matchday squad.

Wigan, who secured their play-off place with a 1-0 victory at relegation-threatened Birmingham City on Tuesday, have made seven changes.

The Latics’ win over Birmingham leaves Rovers as rank 100-1 outsiders to join them in the top six.To make the play-offs Gary

Bowyer’s eighth-placed side have to beat fifth-placed Wigan and hope that sixth-placed Reading lose at home to promoted Burnley and seventh-placed Brighton & Hove Albion lose away to Nottingham Forest.

And if that was not hard enough, Rovers must also overturn a seven-goal swing on Reading

Well the game just sums up Blackburn's season. Simply can't defend and leaving the keeper vulnerable.

We need to be stronger next season and aim for automatic promotion.

Agreed, the defence is the main reason why Rovers could not do well.
