THRILLED Gary Bowyer identified Paul Robinson’s penalty save as the key moment of Blackburn Rovers’ vital 3-1 victory at Charlton Athletic on Saturday.

The in-form Ewood Park outfit opened the scoring through red-hot Rudy Gestede’s seventh goal in seven starts but they would have been pegged back before the break had Robinson not denied Marvin Sordell from the spot.

Sordell atoned for his error in the second half, with a goal that disappointed Bowyer, but strikes from fit-again duo Michael Keane and Tom Cairney ensured Rovers recorded an impressive success.

The victory means they will have a mathematical chance of snatching sixth spot if they win their final game of the season at home to Wigan on Saturday.

“Robbo pulled off a magnificent save,” said Rovers boss Bowyer, who felt his side were denied a ‘nailed-on’ penalty in the first half when Jordan Rhodes was pole-axed by the Charlton goalkeeper.

“It was a big moment as to go in still leading at half-time was important. Then we came out second half and did ever so well.

“The performance level again was exceptional from the players.

“The football we played on a difficult pitch was very good and we mixed the game up superbly.

“Going into the game we said we wanted to make sure we had no regrets at the end of the 90 minutes and we’ve certainly done that and given ourselves something to play for against Wigan.”
